Lawmakers Urge FTC to Probe Sniper Weapon Sales

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Several Democratic lawmakers on Thursday urged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the marketing of military sniper rifles to civilians, noting that such a weapon may be involved in the recent Washington area shootings.

Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the top Democrat on the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee (news - web sites), and three fellow House Democrats wrote in a letter to the FTC that sniper weapons are different from standard hunting rifles because they are designed to strike a target from a distance.

"Their accuracy and range capabilities make these weapons among the most dangerous available today," the lawmakers said. "They can hit targets accurately one mile away and can inflict damage to targets up to four miles away."

Conyers noted that the FTC did a study of entertainment industry marketing practices and violence after the Columbine school shootings in 1999.

Gun control advocates gained momentum in Congress immediately after several publicized shootings in U.S. schools but foes of new controls were able to defeat the initiatives.

The M-40A1 is essentially a Remington 700 with a fiberglass stock and Unertl 10x scope built specially for the USMC. It is a bolt-action rifle instead of automatic, which locks the round in place better and gives more consistant accuracy. The M40A3 is extensively rebuilt from the earlier design and features many improvements.

Why yes, it's a modified Model 700, which is THE deer hunting
rifle of choice in America!

Let's not even get into the fact that the Barret M82 .50 caliber
semi auto rifle was produced in the early 80s for PRIVATE CITIZENS
before the military even noticed it or thought about adopting it...

Speaking of bows, someone with a compound bow and broadhead arrows could do the exact same thing that this "sniper" is doing with a rifle. There was a case in Toronto a while back where someone's dog was shot thru the head with an arrow, it wouldn't be that hard to start putting holes in people with them either. A crossbow would also work but it'll be limited in range and accuracy.

God damn Democrats. Those people have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to guns, yet they keep spouting their bullshit. They don't realize that there isn't much difference between a hunting rifle and a sniper rifle.

It's really not that long range. It doesn't take some fancy rifle or incredible markmanship. But why think when you can just ban more guns.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't these shootings taking place at ranges like 100 to 300 meters.

If I remember that right, thats not long range shooting.

If I remember that right, thats not long range shooting.

Yep *Long range for Me start at 1 Klick(Km for you nickname impaired)
(1000 Meters=1KM)

And for the REAL Proffesionals (IE Memebers of the Quater Inch Club)
*Long Range starts at 1 Mile on a target the size of a Nickle
(1609 Meters or so =1 Mile)

Hell I hit a 2KM shot before myself but never agian,
The abilty to shoot 5 shots under a quater inch at 1M in under 30 seconds? Yeah less than fifty people can do that one
