I want to be able to post on ASVS among other newsgroups. How would I go about doing that?
I don't really know how to do it. About all I know is that i can do it through Outlook express.
Can someone please help?
How do i get on to ASVS

First, you will need a news server. Your isp may already have provided one for you. If you do not have one, you can register for a free account at news.cis.dfn.de . Be sure to read their terms of service first.
Once you have a server, you will have to tell your newsreader about it. Since you have mentioned Outlook, I will provide instructions for that program.
Go to the 'Tools' menu and select 'Accounts'. A box will appear. There will be a row of buttons to the right. Click the button labelled "Add>". A menu will appear. Select the 'news' option. Outlook will proceed to interrogate you. Answer all of its questions truthfully and click 'next' button at bottom once you have finished each round of questioning. You will first be asked for your name and email address. Those should be easy to answer. Then it will ask for your server. Type in the server's name. If the server requires a password, check the box underneath the name blank. If you checked the box, you will be asked your username and password. Underneath those blanks is a check box. If you want your newsreader to remember this information so you never have to type it out again, check it.
Once all this is finished, you may select your newsgroups. Open up your news account. Somewhere on the screen you should nw see a button labelled 'newsgroups'. Click it. You will see a list of newsgroups available on your server. You can scroll through it or search for the ones you want.

You can also access most groups using Google. Go to groups.google.com and follow links until you get to the desired group. For ASVS, click on alt, then use the menu to look for startrek as if it were a list of encyclopedia volumes. From there you can go to vs groups and there to alt.startrek.vs.starwars.
It appears that the following url will take you directly there.
http://groups.google.com/groups?&group= ... s.starwars
Because it lets you use your web browser Google is easier for a neophyte than conventional usenet access. But it also has some annoying problems. Principal among these is the long delay between updates, sometimes as long as twelve hours. Most serious usenetters use Google only for reference.

Only one newsreader can contract email viruses from newsgroup traffic. It is Outlook. If you value your data, use something else.
For a real newsreader, get Xnews. It's free, faster than Outlook, and isn't vulnerable to viruses. http://xnews.newsguy.com

It's not my place in life to make people happy. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to watch me slaughter cows you hold sacred. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to have your basic assumptions challenged. If you want bunnies in light, talk to someone else.

Yes. Google is -S L O W-! It's nice if you're stuck in Zimbabwe without a mail client. But pulling teeth is better than a root canal too. But it is a nice way to dredge up ancient history and fling it at thy enemies.Raxmei wrote:You can also access most groups using Google. For the record on a group like ASVS you are unlikely to be burnt by OE and I perosnally have used it to browse and post for the last 2.5 years without a single problem. Xnews can also be a bit intimidating to newcomers (I've tried it but never really gotten hooked). In other words OE can work and will work, you just need to be cautious outside of untrustworthy groups.Stormbringer wrote:Thanks, I'll do that. "I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of god. I have seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness. "

Unfortunately there are a number of dipshits who have taken to spamming Klez and posting homebrew OE-crashers (such as javascript infinite window opening loops) into every newsgroup they can find. It's just a matter of time until something nasty winds up in ASVS. Considering the risk posed by OE preview-exploit viruses its IMO just not worth it to use OE.CmdrWilkens wrote: For the record on a group like ASVS you are unlikely to be burnt by OE and I perosnally have used it to browse and post for the last 2.5 years without a single problem.
