You have your evil/cute masked puppy avatar over there.
Anyway, it is pretty creepy her
knighting Gates. but the last I heard he has given an awful lot of money to help vacinate people world wide.
Other Americans to have received the KBE include George Bush, the former president, Rudolph Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, Steven Spielberg, the film director, and Alan Greenspan, the chairman of the US Federal Reserve Bank.

What has Bill Gates ever done for Britain other than give them crappy computer systems? And besides, since when does 'smashing flat competition and forming a monoploy' equate to 'services to global enterprise'?

You guys know that means absolutely nothing here in America, correct? We don't recognize titles of nobilty, so this is all just masturbation. He gets to add "Sir" to his name. Joy.

He can't call himself Sir; it's an honorary knighthood. He can put KBE after his name. IIRC you have to be a UK citizen to get to get the 'real' knighthood and the 'sir' title.

He may start a new trend with rich and famous in the US,and like i wrote at SB he may want to be called "Sir William Gates of Microsoft"

What exactly does being a Knight of the Realm do for a British citizen? Do they have new duties to Her Majesty's government? Or is it at this point completely titular, with no obligation to fight for the crown in times of war?

As far as I know its just a title.
Its a pity in a way. Some peacekeeping duties for Gates in Iraq would be excellent

Giving away billions to charity seems pretty decent enough to me, Elton John was knighted as well and he's just made music.
Bill Gates is also going to give away his entire fortune to charity(They currently operate the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation, giving away money to all kinds of things, such as improving education and granting money to AIDS research) after he's dead, though his kids will get a "starter package" of 10 million $.
If Elton John is anything togo by in what is require to be knighted, billy boy has done more than enough to deserve the title of "Sir" several times over, irregardless of whatever feelings people might have on his company's bussiness practices.
So far this thread just seems to be about mindlessly jumping on the "bash Gates" bandwagon without any actual thought as to why he might get this title.
Though I admit, they are giving him the title for the wrong reasons, there are other, far more honourable reasons to give him such a title.

Thats the one thing I really admire about Gates: He's not giving his kids his billions, he wants them to make their own millions. He wants them to all be New Money, none of these expectations of wealth you get in the uppitty rich pricks.

Uh, it's an honourary title. You didn't think the Round Table still existed did you?

It should though, and armor should be mandatory, and they should go forth and smite the wicked.... mmm, maybe not... no reason to make myself a target.

Power armour clad men and women carrying ultrasonic induced swords and riding on genetically engineered dragons like Nazgul.
Yes, YES!

I stand corrected, but maintain that he should be knighted for 'charity' and not 'services to global enterprise'.
