Airsoft is like paintball except with rubber bullets or something like that, right?
Do they have full automatics?

airsoft IIRC uses 6mm plastic BBs. Most of the guns are modeled after real ones and look pretty cool. Yeah, you can get automatics.
I havent actually played it myself but I would like to sometime.

The realism of the guns makes it more appealing than paintball, but they're too expensive for me to get into.

*imagines sneaking up on someone, then out of sheer evil, unload an entire 30 round magazine into the person's back*

A rifle with 350 fps is only $80. It is singleshot though.
If you mean the Full Sized automatics yeah those can get pricey.

Nah, they usually start turning around between 8 and 14 rounds into the clip. Then you're shooting their abdomen, chest and arms.
Still fun.
Mine kinda looked like
this.

I'm an airsofter.
Unless you specifically want to play sniper or use bolt-action or specifically designed semi-autos.. most will be AEGs, automatic electric guns.
Stock, they will shoot at around 280 fps. Enough to give you a good sting. Most people will have their modified to fire around 350-400 fps. Sniper rifles will clock in around 500-600 fps with 6mm plastic BBs.
Let me tell you, they can hurt faaaar worse than paintballs. Paintballs never given me big permanent scars.
Airsoft has its advantages by being more realistic and mil-sim orientated and is a smaller tighter-knit community. The downside is you get the CS-kiddie wannabes. The ones going around screaming their Delta Force or some crap like that. The kids who don't listen to safety rules and such. But that's understandable, the more we play on paintball fields, the more the kids see the cool toys and gear and beg mommy and daddy for a gun.
But for my loadout.. I have an m16-a2 modified to 370 fps. Several hi-capacity mags (300 rounds). I used to have an m9 gas gun, but I lost it on the field and I think some paintballer took it.

Yeah, I'd only be interested in airpowered ones, too. Stuff like P90s, AK-47s, MP-44s, MP5-Ks, the good stuff.

Hmmm.. airpowered airsoft guns, like gas powered are not as reliable as electric, they can leak, break down easier, and it costs $$ to keep them filled.
And AEG, with upgrades and accessory hoo-has will cost around 400 dollars but is well worth it. There is a certain amount of satisfaction with shooting someone in the back.
Also the mini-guns are not used on the field that often, and you'll probably be laughed off the field if you go to a big game. There's a huge game called Operation Lion Claws with a returning leader, Colonel Danny McKnight, retired, coming this May.

Like hell I'd actually play combat with other people.
I'd just want them to own.

I've been looking. If I can get enough money together, I'm going for the Tommy gun and the Pulse Rifle mod for it.

I've got two Sig P226s. One of them doesn't have any oil in it anymore, because I put Baby Powder in its barrel so that when it shot, smoke came out like in old movies. It looks awesome, but now when you pull the slide back, it stays back. But that's cool, because now it's an "out of ammo" prop.

And me. My current armory of airsoft weapons includes a Sig P228 , a HK USP, a Colt M1911, a HK Mk.23 Socom and a Steyr AUG carbine.
Interesting enough, I also used to own a Robocop Beretta M93R, but I promtly broke it so I sold off the parts that could still be used and put the rest in the bin. I'm thinking off selling my Sig as well as its grip is way too small for my hands and it gives me trouble controlling the weapon.

Didn't they just have a national championship a few weeks ago? I think I remember hearing something about it from the local airsoft organization.

Wanna put a pic up for those of us who might be interested in taking it off your hands?

They have kits with different gears and springs and just about every modification you can think of. But you should NOT open up your gear box unless you're a professional. Even the positioning of the teeth relative to each other on the gears are very important. You screw that up, your gun won't work.

I always buy the ones that cost me the equivalent to about 3 US dollars if they look cool (realistic) and have a balanced grip (I have one that has added metal to the grip/clip so it feels a bit more like a real gun). Once I bought a case with two really small guns that could fit in the palm of my hand. Really cool, because I could fire both of them and reload them with one hand (think the shotgun in T2 during the bike chase). Apparently my RoF was too fast because one of them eventually broke inside.
I use them till they fall apart and then toss 'em.

One of my friends opened a "desert eagle" replica (also from these cheap thingies) and replaced the spring with a real-gun spring. I once perforated a 6mm diameter hole into a hard disk metal plate
The downside was that you couldn't shoot people with it and you weren't able to use the soft plastic balls more than once.

Yeah, the spring adds a lot of power. And for AEG's at least (the expensive 300 dollar toys), you should never reuse BBs. And there are different graded springs, due to the fact that most people/groups/parks have a FPS limit. Because as you probably noted, go fast or close enough.. it's going to break through skin.
