"Shogun" Question

Post by HemlockGrey »

Excellant book, though I found some of the historical exposition a little tiring (probably just because I already knew it). Although I know its completely improbable, I'm currently rooting for a Catholic invasion of Japanese and an ultimate Jesuit victory, simply because they're the least objectionable of the political factions.

Now, none of the characters in the book seem to have existed in real life. But there are some parallels I noticed to actual history, and I think that the following conclusions can be drawn:

Dictator Goroda = Oda Nobunaga
Taiko Nakamura = Hideyoshi
Lord Toranaga = Ieyusu Tokugawa
Ishido = ?

Now, does anyone know if some of the lesser characters in the book (i.e. Yabu, Omi, Miriko, Father Alvito etc.) have roots in fact?

ahh. i just started reading Noble House by the same author. i knew the name of the book sounded familiar. i think he mentions something about what if anything is connected to real life in the preface of this book . . . .i'll have to check through it again later.

Check out Servant of the Shogun by Richard Tames. It's about William Adams from Gillingham, Kent, who was a shipwrecked on Japan and became a samurai.

He was the historical basic for John Blackthorne.
