Alien: Resurrection Special Edition Rant (Spoilers)

Weyland-Yutani bought out by WAL-MART? What the fucking hell?!

Having just seen the special edition today (was the least anticipated in the box set, watched the others over Xmas and can now rate Alien 3 with a decent mark) I was just aghast when I heard that line and had to run it in my mind several times to check for humour.

I was hoping the special edition would improve but it seems to have slipped the film further down my appreciation list.

When it first came out I liked it. Saw it on TV and it was so-so and now it's just plain mediocre and while I can say the AvP movie isn't canon or part of the franchise, this film is... unfortunately.

Why oh why could they not end it on the superior special edition Alien 3 ending?

Resurrection sucked the first time I saw it, it was a stupid plot and had stupid design to boot.

And any hope in the special edition dwindled when I heard that line about The Company.

What a fucking crock, now people can see why I want AvP to burn if this is a standard being set.

Alien 3 had a special edition? What's added?

As for Resurrection, I thought it was hit-and-miss. The humour is entertaining, but too much of it is stupid. What's worse is that it was written by Joss Whedon, so I kinda expected more y'know? The director also went nuts with the stupid. Like overuse of CGI for mundane shit like the general guy throwing the grenade (he never sees it go in the escape pod, and it bounces around before falling in - all so we could see an "impressive" CGI grenade), or unnecessary shit like the alien swimming in water, or ruinous shit like the alien walking around without bothering to be stealthy.

Total rework. Get the Quadrilogy box set and see how the film exonerates itself. Truly a great work now.

I only expected it to be a popcorn flick working off the grandiose reputation of the original two films (the third having that love/hate relationship back then) but now I'm older and wiser by a factor of 7 years (boy, was that a long time ago) I feel the charm has left me and the only French directed sci-fi flick of that year should be The Fifth Element, not this.

EDIT: Oh yeah. I HATE the fucking Newborn. Well done, Mr. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you just fucked with the best biological entity in sci-fi by giving it that fucking stupid human reproductive system so now the Queen (which, by the way, sounds shit) loses all respect as the bitch of a nemesis and now looks craptacular as the thing gives birth.

I found the Alien Ressurection extras disc to be more enjoyable than the actual movie. I'll never watch the movie again, and I am totally serious.

This, however, reinforces my desire to write a series of Alien movies where the Xenomorphs aren't the featured enemies... a series following some Colonial Marines. :)

I actually liked Alien ressurection for the most part. The ending sucked, but that one crazy scientist kissing the alien through the lexan... I find yself identifying with his character :P

The special edition of Resurrection is superior to the theatrical for the sole fact that Ripley's relationship with Newt is explored--finally some character development, and it was cut out! The new beginning and that "walmart" line are dumb though.

Alien 3 was always a good movie, very underrated, and the special edition rocks--it doesnt fix the problems with the script but it definitly makes it into a much fuller film (though i prefer the original versions ending--the workprint sucks, with only temp FX compositing and Goldenthals magnificent score left in ruin).

I definately preferred the new cut of alien 3, but i thought the special edition of resurrection was just awful. I'm glad they cut all that crap out. Though i actually quite like the theatrical release.

I used to say there were only two Alien movies. I've upgraded it to three, but I'm never going to consider Ressurection an Alien movie...

Same here, Fincher has redeemed himself. It's weird, but I don't think Jean-Pierre Jeunet is at fault in the fourth film, I think Joss Whedon fucked it over since he wrote it and made it into a Buffy comedy with aliens.

I sure hope Hollywood never makes any more films.

Oh yeah, I was discussing this on another board and look what some guy found out about his school.

BTW, Lance Hendriksen's character in the upcoming AvP movie is going to have the last name "Weyland"... however, since this is supposed to be set in modern times, I forsee no way they can retcon successfully.

It's bollocks I say, as the loyal Culture Vulture of this board. :P

AvP is not-canon to me and is a spin-off with an amusing twist involving Predators. If it sucks, and it looks like it may, then I can sleep safe knowing only the fourth Alien film sucked badly out of four.

I just realised something really really fucking stupid that really fucking annoyed me in resurrection. The Newborn smacking the queen. When a POWER LOADER smacked her one in Aliens! Silly silly part.

Yes, the Newborn ripped her jaw off with a glancing blow yet that bigass Caterpillar power-loader didn't do shit, not even when it landed on the Queen.

Joss Whedon obviously neglected to see the other three films.

You shouldn't have. With the exception of Toy Story every movie project he's worked on has been hijacked and ruined. He all but disowned Ressurection after the director and others fucked over the script.

I wouldn't say that Fincher redeemed himself, because it never really was much of his fault.

True, it's always the studio execs that butcher such things and it was his first true film.

Fincher never needed redeeming because he had nothing to do with the script. And thats not counting the fact that even with the mess of a script, it was further butchered by the studio.
