Arminus picked his username from the great German hero of Arminus, also called
Hermann, who completely destroyed the XVII, XVIII, and XIX Legions of the
Roman Empire, led by Publicus Quinctilius Varus in the Teutoberg Wald in 9 A.D.
securing Germanic freedom from the Roman Empire.

BTW, I know this because they had a special on the History Channel last night,
in which I learned that the Battleground has been found - by a british major
of all people!

While prospecting one day, he found a cache of Roman coins that had Varus'
counterstamp on them, and the discoveries just ballooned, and led to the discovery
of one of the mass graves that the Romans buried their legions remains in seven
years after the battle...

And even more ironically, it lead to the withdrawl of the Romans. With their withdrawl the Germanic tribes relapsed not to be reunited until modern times. It's credited with setting Germanic civilization back hundreds of years.

Actually first they took their revenge.. then they withdrew, becuase they'd killed practically everyone and whats the point of holding unproductive territory?

Known to me as Hermann der Cherusker.

This had many causes, least of them the defeat of the Romans. The Treaty of Westphalia in particular prevented a unified German state for a very long time.

Arminius was actually originally a soldier in the Roman army, but he deserted due to the Roman governor Publius Varus' incompetence and became a warlord within the Cheruski, the Germanic tribe from which he came.

Didn't Arminiass once say that he hated Germans?
Even more ironic.. or he's just so stupid he doesn't know.

Not as bad as the Guy who used to infiltrate hate groups in College, always using names from B-Movies. His personal favorite was the name of the Killer Pimp played by Wings Hauser in the movie Vice Cops
