Well fuck............

At 9:00 p.m., I found out that my 85 year old grandma, my only suriving grandparent, got hit by some fucknut's car while crossing at 19th Avenue and Ortega at 4:30p.m.

For the non-San Franciscans, 19th avenue is one of the busiest roads in San Francisco. It's one huge street that connects Highway 101 in the south, goes through Golden Gate Park and becomes a part of the Golden Gate Bridge. It's essentially a 6 lane highway with traffic lights.

The cunt said he didn't see anything until she was already plastered against his windshield. At the moment, I'm told there's bleeding in her head and that she has a broken hip. On top of the fact that she's had a history of problems with her brain (got a tumor removed 2 years ago and had another one last year to remove a dural fistula) so a head injury does not particularly bode well...

Now here's the rub: we live on 17th Avenue and Noriega. She was literally 3 blocks away from our front door. She may die of an injury inflicted upon her when she was within 7 minutes walking distance of her own home.

Shit, I even heard the ambulances go right past my front door on the way to help her and I thought nothing of it at the time....

Shit...

Bummer, man. That sucks. I hope she makes it out alright.

Was it especially foggy today at that time? It was fine down at Cow Palace.

Thanks for the sentiments guys,

I just got a phone call from my mom and dad at the hospital. They're prepping her for surgery but it's taking longer than they expected. Apparently, all of the work that's been done on her over the years is increasing the prep time.

For part of the dural fistula operation last year, her surgeons placed platinum coils inside some of her veins to solve the problem. Strong metal coils and surgical instruments for immediate trauma surgery don't go well together.....

They said that she might be going into the OR as late as midnight. I've also been told that there's twice as much blood that's been bled off since they last checked....

Things don't look to fucking good at the moment...

Oh yeah, I meant to ask in the first post but forgot to tack it on the end. My dad said that he heard about an accident on 19th and Ortega and only found out it involved my Grandma a while afterwards. Did any other bay area residents hear anything about this on the radio or TV?

Damn, man... That sucks. You have my sincerest condolences and, though it probably doesn't mean much to you, prayers.

As for the one who hit her, the turbolaser isn't good enough.

That's some bad shit, man. My grandma dropped dead in her tracks right in front of me, and I know how much it sucks to see an old person have that kind of stuff happen to them. You have my sympathies, and I think you should take that driver to court and sue the fuck out of her for every penny.

Deepest condolences, Chief. :(

I can only imagine how I would react should something happen to my grandmother. I'm sure the docs will do everything they can, and I hope for the best possible outcome.

you're confusing highway and freeway. a highway has stoplights and crosswalks . a freeway is a high speed roadway with exits and on ramps.

as for what she was doing, crossing at the crosswalk i assume. My condolences, i hope everything turns out okay Chief.

Crossing the street when coming home after getting an MRI to see if her history of brain-problems was going to have a third occurance. I'll have some pictures of the street online tomorrow to show everyone who doesn't know it.

As for her condition, she's still alive. I'm told that they've stabilized her without needing any surger and that much of what they thought was blood was actually something else that the Docs put in her. They were apparently mistaken when they said that the amount of blood bled off had doubled. I'm told that this is a good thing.

However, while not all of it is blood, some of it is, and at her age, it's not going to be reabsorbed any time soon. So she'll have to stay in the hospital for a while. If the amount of blood begins to increase, then they'd have to operate, and I've already mentioned the risks involved with that...

There's also the little matter of her broken pelvis to consider. Even if she's survives all of her injuries, she'll probably have to go into surgery for that. I don't know too much about that aspect of her injuries since I've mostly been focusing on the life/death portion of the whole event, but there's the possibility she'll be wheel-chair bound or will have to go live in a home. Either one would be a living death. Before yesterday, she got around a lot and being crippled or interned in an old folks' home is a grim possibility :x

Also, I've heard a little bit more about the guy behind the wheel. Apparently, he says that he was blinded by the sun just before he hit her. Later today, I intend to go down to 19th avenue at the time the collision happened and take pictures of the sun to see how feasible this is. Even if the bastard was blinded by the sun, he should have known to slow down to a speed that wouldn't have plastered somebody against a windshield

It's possible to adapt to being incapacitated. My late grandmother spent the happiest years since by grandfather died in a home (we did find a very good home that encouraged independence, though.)

Not trying to make light of it, just saying that it could have been worse, and with your help she can pull through.

Best wishes.

I realize you are rightfully upset about this entire incident, but are you not willing to even consider the possibility that the guy just fucked up?

The way you're talking about hunting the guy down makes it sound like you consider him a cold-blooded killer or something. Kinda rash when you don't entirely know the situation.

Yes. The idea that the person behind the wheel may have innocently fucked up has occured to me. That's why I wanted to go down to the street and take photos of the sun to see if sun-blinding was genuine and not just an excuse to somewhat cover their ass. Unfortunately, it was as cloudy as fuck yesterday and the sun was nowhere to be found, so no photos.
