Weight Lifting Advice

Post by Thirdfain »

I've started working out regularly again, and I'm at a smaller gym than I'm used to, without machines or a trainer staff.

What can I do with free weights for my lats?

If you just started working out, why are you already trying to focus on a particular muscle group? You should be trying to work out your whole body, since it is a reasonable bet that your whole body does, in fact, need work.

speaking of, I need a way to, with out any machines, to make my ass harder. I can assure you I have no ulterior motives, its for my diving in swimming; I need to make a cleaner entry and my ass is not entering cleanly. Thats the only reason  :)

I've been lifting since sophmore year of high school, I've only been off it for about 2-3 months. I'm at a new gym now, though, without any machines- just some benches and free weights. A lot of the muscle groups I used to exercise with machines I am no longer sure how to handle.

"Buns of Steel" should be available at your local video rental establishment.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Pull ups. Once you get strong doing them, you can do weighted pull ups.

And check this site out while you're at it. It's a great resource and lists many different exercises for every different muscle.

The hardcore guys don't use machines. Machines give you a highly unnatural strength buildup which is not balanced properly, and which contributes to the ridiculously high rate of muscle pulls and other assorted injuries among modern athletes.

If you want an exercise that hits your muscle groups with free weights, do deadlifts. When asked which muscles the deadlift works, Lou Ferrigno once answered "everything from your feet to your neck". I may not be particularly knowledgeable in human physiology myself, but the Incredible Hulk has got to know something about weightlifting

Mike's right, and this is one of the big problems I have--you need a partner and supervision. A spotter is a necessity.

Right, thanks. I have a spotter, and the weight room is supervised.
