Ah Rainbow, how I miss my childhood programmes.

I remember watching Rainbow as a kid and just this past week someone in my flat has got a print-out off the Net called "The Dark Side of Rainbow" with all these innocent quotes you'd never think were wrong when you were 7. Rainbow was just one of many British childrens shows from the past that tried to put in as many sexual and drug related innuendos as possible.

Oh and a related SNL link.

Jingleheimer Junction was good, but I loved this one sketch they did in which a kids' show is broken into frequently by live reports about a crime spree some of the cast was on. Though, the best kids' show parody I've seen was Mad TV's Reading Railroad sketch, where a kid's show is hosted by a group of conspiracy theorists.

Didn't it also have a character called Master Bates?

Nope, both of these rumours are urban myths, I'm afraid, they were denied on one of those 100 best programs on C4 I think, besides, Captain Pugwash has been repeated on Channel 3 back home, and there is no Roger the Cabinboy, Master Bates or Seaman Staines, sorry... :)

My, how little you people know about British children's tellyvision.

There have even been people I've known who talked to those that worked on CBBC's Playbus who said they put all this stuff in to relieve the tedium of making a kiddies show.

There's also a film coming out this year of that '60s/'70s claymation classic The Magic Roundabout which was essentially a contest by TV officials to see who could take the most LSD and have their "work" broadcast.

There was also a rainbow where Zippy was supposed to be reading a "comic book" but they didn't have an appropriate prop and used a porn mag instead.

Dunno about the truthfullness of that though.

IIRC there was a character that sounded like seaman staines, but it was actually tains or something.

EDIT: I downloaded it, GODFUCKINGDAMN that's funny. I knew there was areason i loved rainbow as a child.

Anyone remember Rocko's Modern Life from Nickelodeon? In one episode, Rocko's dog (who'se named Spunky, BTW) fell in love with Rocko's mop. In one notable scene, you see Rocko put the mop in the closet. Spunky walks in right behind, and the door was cracked open, so he gets in. Next thing you see the door shuts and this white liquid comes out from under the door. Last time I saw this I was probably 15 or so, so I pretty well knew that something was amiss on Nickelodeon.

OMFG...

That show had so much concentrated gay sexual innuendo I'm surprised it saw the light of day much less aired! W(+)W!

While that clip wasn't shown publically except on the general satire clip show TV Offal, Rainbow had a lot of connotations as did other notable examples of children's programming.

Jesus Christ! It just kept going, didn't it?

I thought the banana was bad enough, at the start, but it just kept getting worse the whole time!

Can't say I remember that one. Is there a list of places I can go to or some such that would have a list/description of these?
