Shit.
Games addict dies online
March 9, 2004 - 2:00PM

A computer game addict in western China has reportedly collapsed and died at his screen after playing the popular online game Saga non-stop for 20 hours.

The 31-year-old began playing the game regularly at an internet cafe in Chengdu, Sichuan province, three months before his death, according to the South China Morning Post.

An employee at the cafe said he would play for more than 10 hours a day and was found dead on Saturday morning after a marathon 20-hour session, the newspaper said.

It'd be interesting to see what he actually died of, no? The article makes it sound like the gaming killed him, but he could have died of some random medical problem that cropped up *while* he was playing.

His tombstone should be marked:

"Connection reset by peer" or
"Game over"

I have actually seen a tombstone with the first inscription, but I can't remeber where. I'll see if I can find it.

if it were a suicide it would be kind of sad. . . .but in this case it's somehow morbidly funny.

sheesh, 20 hours? thats nothing. when Super Conflict came out for Super Nintendo back in 1993 I played 20 hours a day for a week.... don't even get me started on the NHLPA series games. Although my excuse was i was 17 at the time and had nothing else to do with summer vacation.

Heh. Seeing that statement onscreen is the very reason I employ the screen name that I do when I play online. :D

That tombstone is hilarious. I wonder what the latin for "lagged out" is.

This is far from the first instance of this happening; every once in awhile you hear about someone dieing while doing a marathon game session. The last I heard was about some guy in South Korea, I think, who "logged out" while playing CS.

There a story last year I read about some guy in er...I think it was korea, playing some game for something like 72 hours straight, I think the reason for his death was an accumlation of toxins in his body, though I'm not really sure.

I remember that, they thought the cause of death was starvation IIRC.

Can't be. It takes more than 3 days to starve. He'd have had to have been on death's door already if he starved to death in three days.

Thirst can kill you in three.

more likely heart attack due to malnutrition.

too much caffine, not enough protine & vitamines, sugars go to shit, and the heart just can't deal with it.

I heard of a story alot like this. A guy from china, who played too much everquest, took a break from like 31 hours of play to eat some cereal, and drowned in it.

The moral of the story?

GET OFF YOUR ASS AND DO SOMETHING IN REAL LIFE!

Or better yet, take a break with a Kit-Kat and a nice large dose of SD.Net :D

I thought that he died from partying and drinking to much.

If it was anything related to his gaming at all, it was probably blood clots in the legs from a lack of moment. Eventually one breaks lose, drifts to your brain and then you have a stroke. From time to time this kills people on long airline flights.

well he had just gotten married, had spent hours drinking and eating very fatty foods. he began bleeding uncontrolably from his ears, mouth and nose while having sex with his newest wife.

Bah I only sleep 5 hours a day or less due to gaming and debating... Last night I had 2.5 hours, and before that I had 3.5. And I am at work right now doing fine. Sometimes I make up in the weekends though and take 12 hours of sleep, but not always. Great way to lose weight it seems though :D

People die doing many things- I doubt it's gaming-related. I mean someone, somewhere has to have died on the shitter, since more poeple use that daily than playing games.

Yeah, but there are some people who use these events to argue that games are dangerous.

Maybe one day I'll do the math and show how much more dangerous toilets are than computer games...
