The SCA rocks

Post by Kuja »

Just last Saturday, I joined a couple of friends at an SCA gathering at the Erie County Fairgrounds. Walked away with a black semicircle cloak and a fucking wicked-looking dagger. Then we all went over to one friend's house to test out the new stuff (one friend got a rapier, another got a katana) on a rotting old stump that has long since been used for target practice and got some basic katana lessons from the one of use who is an actual member.

As it turns out, I seem to be a natural with throwing axes. :D

Oh, and nothing beats walking into a Blockbuster with another guy wearing a near-identical black cape, both of us with our hoods up, and having the entire store turn to stare at us.

Hehe, welcome to the wonders of the SCA. Nothing beats walking into a fast food joint or grocery store in full garb. I've been going to events for a couple of years now, it's great fun, and somehow relaxing.

Erie County Fairgrounds...

Ice Dragon? Oh, sorry... The Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon.

Anyway, welcome to the SCA, m'lord. There's a growing faction of us on SDnet.

No.

'Masturbator" is not a word used In Period. (roughly 600-1650 AD)

So what did they call them back then? No doubt people did masturbate at the time; it is the universal pastime.

It would never be approved, even if you did find out what it was called in Period. The ideal is to have a name that would have been in use at the time.

Ah yes, I remember my early youth when I played in the Society for Compulsive Accuracy. At the time they didn't take kindly to Chinese personas, but yet here in the Barony of Elfsea (Dallas/Ft. Worth) in the Kingdom of Ansteorra (Texas and a bit of Oklahoma) they were awful proud of their Mongolian Horde. Too civilised and advanced I guess. Even for AD 500-1650.
Now such personas are more and more common and popular to boot. Ahead of my time and a little too well researched, I suppose.

Anno Dominus. Forgive me, I'm still not used to 'Current Age' or whatever that new word is.

Wrong A, sweetie (took a moment to figure out what you were talking about).

My point was, why can't Supes be the Masturbator? (see Zod's post)

Inappropriate, for one thing-- can't be corrupting the little kids, now, can we?

For another, it's just not the sort of thing that a real person from the era in question would've used... remember, masturbation was a bloomin' SIN for practically forever, and nobody'd have wanted to advertise the fact of their sins!
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Screw that. I'll be 'William the Wanker' or 'Mordar the Masturbator' if I bloody well please. Damn SCA, repressing my true character...

I'd think the Satanic Church of America would be fine with someone calling themselves a masturbator...

...or do I have the wrong SCA?

NO! NO! I have offended the mighty InnerBrat! O One of Beauty and Grace, I humbly prostrate myself in supplication and apology... what must I do, O Illustrious One?

Because despite the fact that my ancestors were jesters, my primary contribution to SCA meets is being one of those terriably uncooth Men of Norse, merchant traders/mercinaries.....

and seeing how good I am with padded axe, and throwing axe, I am very good at being a Viking...

Heh, the Vikings rock here in An Tir. I have a pirate/mercenary persona. (I've been told on a few occasions that I roleplay my persona disturbingly well.)

So...this is like, what, Civil War re-enacters?
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

No. The medieval period, actually. Unfortunately, my local branch can't get the insurance for jousting. Oh well.
