What Happened to ASVS?

Post by Cromag »

I only drop in once in awhile to see what the old timers are up to, perhaps catch a laugh out loud post from Sonnenberg, and I can't find any of 'em.

Why can't I find any of 'em? Because some twits seem to have taken over the group with their mindless posts, notably, these Xomicron and Snubis trolls. What's up with the elders? Have they been drowned out by these new wankers?

Minor edit to make final question clearer

I do believe they're pretty much all here.

Chuck hasn't posted here in quite a while. Dalton would probably be the best person to ask, but I suspect Chuck is terribly busy with real life these days. Strowbridge doesn't post here anymore, and I don't know if Tyralak has ever registered here. Much of the core group is here but there are others missing as well.

SD.net has effectively replaced ASVS, but its not ASVS. SD.net is its own identity that draws heavily from ASVS but has also attracted some SB.com members and has drawn some new members entirely who are now part of the VS community in general.

ASVSs strength also became its weakness. The unmoderated atmosphere proved to open to invassion by trolls. SD.net provided a friendly but controled atmosphere run by a former ASVS regular.

Unmoderated newsgroups thrived in the old days, when a fairly small subset of the general population had Internet access. Most Internet users back then were in university.

Today, the Internet is crawling with 14 year olds who are using their parents' AOL accounts. It's simply not an environment conducive to the smooth operation of an unmoderated discussion group.

I'll have you know that I used my parents' AOL account when I was 12, thank you very much! ;)

Holy shit, that was like 10 years ago. At any rate, you're right; very few people were even on AOL or Compuserve back then. I remember that the official public Star Trek chatroom could only hold 23 people and was rarely full. Of course, that was back in the day when you were only allowed 10 hours a month or you had to pay extra, or something like that. Still, you compare that today and it's simply amazing how the internet's exploded in the last 10 years.

I shudder to think what the newsgroups/listservs/chatrooms would be like without moderation nowadays. You either have keep it as secret as possible, under as watchful an eye as possible, or make the consequences for misbehavior as steep as possible(another board I frequent redirected you to goatse.cx if you were banned). And even then, the disruptions can sometimes get to be too much. Autocracy is usually the only way to go in popular discussion groups/chatrooms.

Trolls have a way of coming and going. Snubis is just copying/pasting a bunch of offensive posts and then crossposting them to as many newsgroups as he can. He goes through dizum.net and then teranews so tracking him back to his original ISP is difficult. However, you just go back in his history and you can find that he subscribes to Roadrunner.net somewhere in the Tampa Bay area.

Simplest thing to do is filter out all messages with his favorite topics and you find how quickly he disappears from your newsreader.

Good lord, you mean one person was responsible for all that e-diarrhea? Is it human?

Good point, way of the world I guess. A great pity, though, I looked forward to reading the posts of the OG ASVS'ers, Chuck in particular.

I remember trawllng some of the older ASVS postings a few years ago, I'm fairly sure there were several of them proclaiming the greatness of an unmoderated discussion enviroment, and how it was better than a moderated one.

But like you said, times have changed.

And then there are those of us who are here not for the VS stuff, but just because. :)

Chuck pops by to post his fanfic, but otherwise doesn't do much. I'd imagine him quite busy.

He's had a lot of computer troubles recently, but also got a new computer several weeks ago. He still posts to ASVS, mostly his fanfics (which are also hijacked) and to the Fanfics forum here.

I've all but given up on it. I grow tired of updating my newsfilter every goddamn day. Then some of the regs start [OT]Politics threads on top of that.

Well, I just made the switch from OE to Xnews and did that make all the difference. I just set the crosspost kill to >1 and voila.

Only 680k to download Xnews

Believe me, it's worth it. Then all you have to do is drop RavCav in the Killfile and you're all set.
