Atheist Symbol?
Hey people, first off, I'd just like to bring up that this is my first post here. I was introduced to the place by my older brother, known here as Icehawk. It looked like a pretty cool place, so I decided to join up.
Now, onto business. The site above is a link to a site with an idea for a symbol for Atheists. I stumbled across it just out of curiosity when I typed in Google search "atheist symbol" and it was the first link. It's a pretty interesting concept IMO. I was just curious what you thought about it. You can also post your person symbol ideas in here if you wish.

Whoops, sorry, it should work now. I tried it after I fixed my post and it worked for me. If not, just go to google and type "atheist symbol" and it'll be the first link.

I think the circle is already being used by... everyone.

Yeah, the circle is too generic. Nice idea (creating some kind of symbol for atheism), but we atheists are not really connected by any common ideology, unless you consider it an ideology to not believe in one particular ideology (which, at the risk of quoting an overused aphorism, is a bit like saying that "bald" is a hair colour).

I think the best symbol for atheism would be a lack of one, because of the accompanying lack of beliefs.

The American Atheists symbol is a bit too busy. Perhaps something more like a giant A. A can stand for atheism, but it can also stand for anal sex!

Also - the Anarchists used a giant A long before the American Atheists were formed IIRC.

Circles are definate no-nos since they have a remote relation to witchcraft, and then you'll have all sorts of fundies and whatnots spouting shit about atheists being in league with satanists and witches. And you wouldn't want that, would you? Probably not, but who wouldn't want to piss off dumb fundies?

I think the symbol for atheism should be a vagina.

Under normal circimstances, athiesm wouldn't need a symbol any more than people who don't believe in unicorns need a symbol. However, being one of the last minorities against whom it's acceptable to be openly bigoted, a symbol is useful because it helps identify a common community and define it in its own terms.
That said, the circle and the capital A are already in use. There wouldn't happen to be one symbol in physics or mathmatics that represents the entire universe, would there?

Isn't the idea of making an Atheist symbol a bit contrary to the point of being Atheist?

Yes but I barely read the rest of the posts, so you see in my world it was justified to say...

Take the nuclear model of an atom, stick an 'A' where the nucleus would be, and voila- Atheist symbol.

Yeah, that's the one I appear to have stole from someone. My friend had it as a display pic on MSN, but she claimed to have made it, so there you are.
