How do I dispose of kitchen knives

I live in an apartment complex and was wondering to how to dispose of huge kitchen knives. Since we have a new set, I am throwing the old one out. If I just throw them in the dumpster, someone might get hurt on them. If I put them in a bag, someone might stab themself.
How do I throw out all these knives?

Usually a city has a larger disposal site for anything big and most importantly...things of dangerous nature.
I would start there.

This is Chico, not a city. I do have a sharp bin at the funeral home, but these knives won't fit in that.

You could severly dull them then dispose.
It's the safest way if you know how...because then no different then throwing out a fork.

Ok, here we go..
You know that recycling center in the grocery store parking lot (your in california there has to be one nearby)
They can take the knives and either resell them or recyle them for the steel. Or you can give them to Goodwill/Salvation Army and help out some welfare moms, or college students in need of good cook ware...
on the other side of the equasion, I do recall my college days when one of my med student friends made a BBQ/stake knife set from his autoclaved and serilized used lab knives.... (cuts right through that inch thick stake no problem, but then again it also can cut right through flesh and bone too)

Bah, damn welfare moms! They suck all my tax dollars!
I'll just give them to the recycle people with no teeth behind the local Safeway.

Damn you must have the same recycle people in Chico that we have behind the Pioneer Grovvery in Mariposia near Yosemite.
at least it sounds that way... (Ok, Mariposia is hick central, then again a lot of the young couples are on welfare right now, as the guys are "Over There", including the jerk that stole my Athalon 1333mhz computer, just before he shipped out. Remind me that is the LAST time I LAN CS & C&C with someone about to be sent to Iraq....)

You could probably sell them to a pawn shop. I wouldn't expect you'd get much for them, but a couple of bucks is better than nothing.

how would someone hurt themselves?
you throw them into the garbage can, the garbage is emptied automaticly into the garbage truck and from there automaticly dumped onto the garbage dump. no potential hazards involved.[/list]

YOu pick the knife from the tip, with the cutting side towards you, raise your hand above your head and to the back then throw at the target

Who do you think carries the garbage from the bin to the truck? The fairy godmother?

Get lots of corrugated cardboard and a roll of duct tape. Cut strips of cardboard a bit wider than the length of the blade and wrap a few layers around the blade. Then secure everything with duct tape so the cardboard doesn't fall off. Do this with all your old knives, then tape all the knives together with duct tape and dispose.
Personally I'd keep them around as spares but that's just me.

nobody. the trash cans have wheels and are made out of solid hard plastic. they are rolled to the truck by the garbage people. the trash can is then put onto the little elevetor thingy located on the rear of the garbage truck. as soon as the garbage container is on said elevator one of the garbage people presses a button also located on the rear of the garbage truck. the elevateor then dumps the container into the garbage truck. a press, similar to the presses which cruch old cars, automaticly crushes the trash inside the truck towards the front of the truck. then the truck continues its monthly rout. finally it ends up at the garbage dump where the garbage truck automaticly dumps the garbage onto the rest of the garbage.
there´s no such thing as fairies or a godmother... only cutting edge garbage disposal technology.

You
do actually live in Stuttgart?
The only thing that is carried to the truck is the garbage bin as a whole...
I don't know how you possibly could get something out of those bins without actually opening them. So knifes would be perfectly safe there...

bah! thats not cutting edge. the garbage trucks here have robotic arms that pick up the special plastic bins in front of your house. there is a black one for trash, a green one for paper and a blue one for plastic and glass. It's pretty cool, but it makes for one stupidly expensive garbage truck.

How frigging complicated do garbage trucks have to be? Our trucks have guys who pick up the bags and throw them in the back, where a huge hydraulic press crushes it.
And if you throw sharp knives in the trash, there's a chance someone going trashpicking or dumpster diving might get sliced on them. And then you'll probably be liable.

i was beeing sarkastic because bored shirtless was so absolutely clueless about garbage trucks, despite the fact that garbage pickup days are not exactly on the once-a-millenium-scale. if you leave the house at least every once in a while you´re bound to see this large stinky truck with dirty men doing work in the streets every once in a while. or at least you can see the containers whenever you take your trash out. perhaps he´s filthy rich and has someone to do that for him. or he´s married.

I would not be liable because they wouldn't be able to prove that those knives were mine. I live in an apartment complex.
I have also seen dumpster divers go into them, so putting big kitchen knives in there is really not a good idea... I mean, unless I were some kind of twisted psycho type, then it would be a good idea because I could watch them from a distace while they cut themselves. And then maybe I could shoot them with a pellet gun from a rooftop after they cut themselves and were in pain...
Anyway, I'm just going to recycle the fucking things.

You don't. You hang them on the wall, in front of a cool mahogany board in your lounge.

No.
Typo: rs/fum/fun
I'm white.
I'm middle class.
I'm from the suburbs, thus suburban.
I dumpster dive to get neat still-fully-useable stuff.
I consider that fun.
So, in short, Concession Accepted. YU0=PWN3D.
