More recent reports indicate some 700 hostages, however they let children and Muslims go.
Add this to a long list of Chechen terrorist attacks. Guess blowing up apartment buildings, planting radiological devices and having shoot outs in hospitals wasn’t enough.
Course knowing the Russian army, the Chechens will either escape or be killed along with most of the hostages when the building collapses from either there explosives or a battalion salvo from BM-21's..

The BM-21 would certainly do the trick...

Smart move, it Limits the mobility of any commando team. However with 20 Terrorists any assault is going to be really bloody. It's just not possible to take down that many people before they can set off a bomb or empty a magazine into the crowd.

Yes when combine with the Hind it ensures no terrorist scum will escape. The loss of the hostages and surrounding buildings is of course an unavoidable but necessary result.
I still can't believe they really did it though..

Doesn't look like a Kevlar coalscuttle to me, looks like a normal Russian pot helmet.

We're talking of more than 700 of the Moscow finest. Not everybody goes to the teather. It's highy possible that many of the hostages are influential and rich. It's not the same as a hospital in a distant part of the country.
Much more visibility.

True freedom fighters do not take hostages like that. These are terrorists, nothing more.

Of course, considering who Moscow's finest generally are, if Putin really isn't corrupt, he may choose the battalion BM-21 salvo option to kill two birds with one stone.

They've done the stupidest thing imaginable...
The Russians will storm the place, blow away the terrorists and in the
process kill half the hostages, and then begin liquidating Chechyna
all over again...and hunting down and killing everyone even remotely
connected with the Chechen movement....they're like the Israelis...just
not as NICE...

Putin won't stand for this shit.
But don't underestimate the Russian CT teams. It will be bloody, but they should get the job done.
I pity any poor goddamn Chechens who just happen to be innocent and still in their country.

When they've failed every time before?
If you don't mind lots of blood then T-80U's and an infantry company can resolve this situation in 15 minutes, might actually be less bloody then some of the ops Russian special forces have pulled.

Can't you just smell the love of the religion of peace that is Islam?
Islam is doing its absolute best to demonstrate that its practitioners can only speak with the ABCs of AK-47s, boxcutters, and C4. They are just rabid animals and should be treated as such.

Spetsnaz will storm the place and annihilate them all; and deservedly so. These guys are self-described suicidal, there's no negotiating with them, especially a ridiculous demand like pulling out of Chechnya.
"The Spetsnaz unit Vympel ("Banner") is a counter terrorist unit of the SVR (Foreign Intelligence Service). Originally developed in 1981 as an infiltration unit to conduct infiltration, sabotage, and intelligence missions in enemy territory, Vympel subsequently evolved into a Counter Terrorist (CT) unit, and by 1987 the unit had expanded to a staff of over 500. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 the unit was transferred to the Main Administration for the Protection of the Russian Federation (GUO), along with Spetsgruppa "A", and in 1993 the unit was again transferred to MVD control to MVD. After many original members left, Vympel was disbanded and a new unit, Vega, was created, and subsquently the SVR reinstated the name Vympel."
So they work for the SVR- or the former First Directorate of the KGB.
If they're used, this will be the unit's first trial by fire since being re-established.

Yo, Weemadando:
Why should Enlightenment shut the fuck up? Islam IS the most hateful hurtful barbaric religion on the face of the earth RIGHT NOW. When bad things are done in the name of other religions, 90%+ of the believers in these religions break their backs and shout themselves hoasrse denouncing such barbarism. When it comes to atrocities done in the name of Islam, the silence is deafening. That the practicioners of Islam in theocracies don't say anything is understandable, given the short lifespan such talk will earn you. In the free, secular, west, only a handful condemn this sickness. The sickest part, is the qualifying on the condemnation. "Such acts are contrary to the teachings of Islam, BUT,(fill in your favourite justification: It's poverty, the occupation, blahh blahh...)"
To which I say, "Your BUT is too big."
Just what the fuck do you plan to do about it, anyway? Go to your Mosque, talk to your Imam, and get a Fautwa issued, calling for all good Muslims to kill Enlightenment for sacralige?
If you are not a Muslim, what the fucks it to you, anyway?
Are you among the stupid overeducated left, who only see injustice coming from white Europeans? Do you have problems with people that mention the elephant in the living room?
MAINSTREAM Islam, today, is where Christianity was 1000 years ago. Intolerant, hateful, savage, and VIOLENTLY EXPANTIONISTIC.
Note to the stupid. Mainstream is defined by what the majority of the people are doing.

Note: mainstream Christianity would still be there if not for separation of church and state, which mainstream Christians in America are doing their damndest to destroy.

I think the point you're missing is that Christianity never really changed (see Falwell). It merely got watered down by secular humanism. Secular humanism could do the same to Islam if given a chance, but that would imply visionary leaders in some of those Islamic countries.
