Do any of you martial artists or sports buffs know of a way of strengthening your knuckles so that they don't hurt when striking an object--like a board let's say?

Hit stuff repeatedly.

No, I'm serious. You need to build up your stregnth and resilience, and hitting stuff is the best way to do it. I don't mean whail away on the side of a tree, but hitting stuff does help.

Get yourself a heavy punching bag and do a basic wrap of your knuckles then pound away.

To strengthen other bones etc get yourself an inch think dowel rod about a metre long and just start hitting up and down your arms and legs (lightly at first) until you just don't care/can't feel the pain anymore.

IG-88E, Is there anything I should start with first or should I go right into wood. I mean, is there anything lighter to start with?

like Weema said, try a punching bag. Wrap your knux in cloth though.
