Tribute to a Wonderful Person *cries*

My mom just called me about five minutes ago and told me my grandmother had died. She called already earlier in the day and told me that my grandma had been taken to the hospital a couple of days ago to treat her for symptoms common to people her age, but she had gotten a mild heart attack or other heart failure symptoms and slipped into unconsciousness today and she never woke up. She was 87 years old, and my last surviving grandparent.

The good thing about it is that she got to live at home up until just a couple of days ago and she was vibrant and cheerful pretty much to the end. Runs in her family, they've all lived long and healthy lives. At least she didn't have to suffer in some hospital or nursing home and linger for days or weeks, and I'm grateful for that. She was such a wonderful person, kind and generous to everyone. Many of my best childhood memories are from the weeks we visited her and grandpa during summer. I just wish I'd visited her more often in the last few years, but she lived pretty far away and something always seemed to come up.

Even though I knew and could prepare for the eventuality, it still hits hard. At least I've got the good memories, and I'm going to cherish them as long as I live.

In Memoriam,
Laina Ahokas, 1916 - 2004

I'll add my condolences as well. I have been "prepared" for the passing of my last grandparent, my 93 year old Halmoni (Korean for grandmother). I know that when it does finally happen, though, I'm going to be absolutely wrecked. I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm happy you have so much of her to hold on to.
