Why do pharmacists have platforms?

This always intrigued me. When one goes to the chemist you see the Prescriptions counter. It's always raised by a foot or so.

Anyone know why this is so?

Because they can? Because the architects like to throw in extra stuff so they can gouge 'em? I dunno.

To give the pharmacists a feeling of "power"

to make them seem more intimidating to shop lifters.

So they can display their wares on the front of their counter, which they wouldn't be able to do as effectively if it was on ground level.

In some cases it makes it more difficult for people to jump the counter and grab stuff.

Recently I've been to a relatively new Walgreens that has the pharmacy level with everyone else. It's kind of weird because the counter barely comes up to my hip when I'm more used to them being nearly level with my chest.

I asked my dad (who's a pharmacist). He has no clue :\

I'll admit that I don't often go to pharmacies, but none of the ones that I have been to have had any raised platforms behind the counter.
