Criminology

Post by Anhaga »

So I'm going to have to start thinking of what to do for a Masters and Criminology is one of the things that seems vaguely interesting. I was wondering if anyone here has had some experience with this?

Its pretty much a toss up between Criminology, Anglo-Saxon Literature or some other branch of English.

You should probably do whatever is best for your future career. Sounds like that would be Criminology.

Possibly. If I stick with English I'm going to have to take it all the way to doctorate level and I haven't decided whether I really want to go that far with it.

Ah, well. One more year left to decide.

Criminology seems to be far more useful in the long run...

You can always major in criminology and minor in the other subject. Best to major in the one that will most likely lead to a career advancement. BAs tend to not do that as much as BS degrees do.

I can't actually major in one and minor in the other. The English education system makes you concentrate on one single thing.

I'll be getting a BA in English next year and have already got an internship lined up with a corporation's marketing department for this summer.

So my choices are as follows-
1) Do postgraduate studies in English, follow my dream and try desperately to get a doctorate and then a job lecturing. Easier said than done, but a dream is a dream.
2) Do a masters in criminology or something of the sort and then get a job
3) Milk this internship for all its worth, make a good impression and hope to get invited back again next year thus raising my chances of working my way up the corporate ladder. (I'll do the bit about making a good impression anyway. Even if I go for 1 or 2 a successful internship will still look nice on my CV)

I don't know what your uni does, but here in Lancaster you can major in something and minor.

I am assuming Criminology is the same as Criminal Justice here in the US. If it is I can make a few suggestions as I have my degree in CJ. If you plan on being a lawyer, social worker or get involved with law enforcement, it is the way to go. If you are not interested in any of these things as a career, then I suggest doing something else. I was planning to get into law enforcement, but lost interest in it. So now I am working on a masters for managament. I certainly enjoyed my CJ classes, I just never found a job related to what I studied.

Really? Is that like a Combined Studies programme or something of the sort?

I think we may have something of the sort here at Leicester but I'm not sure how it works.
