When you think of SDnet, where or how do you think of it being? (if at all) Like a clubhouse? Electrons racing around a ring? Some dude in Toronto?

I noticed in a thread that someone refered to SDnet as "here" and I was curious what/where "here" meant in your mind.

My first impression is that here = an international pub in America (more in a continental sense than a national sense).

How 'bout you?

Coffee shop or a bookstore.

Though some seem to assume it's a playground...

Err, I think of it as a webboard.

Havent really thought of it as anything else but an an online discussion/debate forum with a large group of cool people on it.

I suppose if I get creative, I kinda think of it as an elite club or high class pub where intellectuals (and some crazy people ) who share common interests and similar values gather to debate, discuss or just shoot the shit, whatevers on their mind.

A mystic portal, only openable to me, when I use the cermonial knife and align the rings of power with the arse of the ineffable, at the point when the moon lies heavy in the darkening sky, rich with the screams of dying trolls and the unearthly prowlings of the unholy moderators, then, and only then can I open that demonic gate, and allow the heady scent of perversion and geekdom to flood the world until the Wong spreads through out the universe.

Or, alternatively, a webboard which I browse, and have done for almost exactly a year now, whichever works for you.

I really didn't think of it being anything other than an Internet Board, but I guess I would haved eventually thought of it as being like a meeting room where everyone's yelling at each other or something if I did think like that.

Alright, now picture this. Your thrown into a room, naked, wet, cold and hungry. the lights are off and there is metal grating beneath your feet. Then all of a sudden the lights come on and everyone is situated in a gallery watching you. As they watch, they want you to fuck up. Once that happens they take everybody else away and release the robotic gladiators on you. If can survive that with the mutant powers you no doubt have, because you're a mutant who can logically construct arguments and provide evidence so you get nifty shields and what not, Darth Wong comes out. Then he proceeds to beat you down while everyone else watches, cheer, throws peanuts and beer bottles. Those who survive the registry get parked infront of a computer with a message board

It's a giant academic space station. It has seminar rooms (SLAM, N&P, SW/ST), a library (FF), a pub (OT), a harem (SOS), shooting ranges, and a giant barrel of monkeys in the hold.

Never thought of it as much more than a webboard. But if i had to think really hard about it. It reminds me of the Common Room at school, random debates happening, people pissing around and lots and lots of flirtation

A collection of people who have opinions who can talk freely (enough) to each other.

I think of all the webboards like parts of a city, something like the Delta City in Robocop, with various districts reflecting the mood and citi/denizens of that board.

For instance, kgivler is like a happy but silly place with loads of angsty teenagers, sort of like when you see in american films of an inner city where it's really hot and kids are playing with fire hydrants and the like. There it's clean, happy and I have power to keep it that way. Like a sheriff's badge or something.

This would be countered by it's evil twin, nukeweb, where there are too many hateful stupid people that noone can stand up to. Flat Earth Society and other YEC propaganda adorn the littered streets and walls. I am permabanned from there, so now it's all foggy, as I don't know what's going down there. I remember the civil war that was happening when I was there and imagined it somewhat like a holy war between rival gangs. Now I occasionally hear a bit of information about it, but as i said, to me, that part of city is fogged out and wrapped in police "do not cross" tape.

And so on, with the landscape changing according to the pettiness of the rules and the posters, and so forth.

Then there's here, since I use Blacksoul, the sdnet neighbourhood is always in darkness, leading to bad eyesight and pale skin in many of it's inhabitants. It's something like Midgar from ff7, with a big shinra-like building in the centre that leads to the different sections of the plate. The plate is divided into the various sections of the board and again, like ff7, you see the same characters cropping up in all the different parts.

When one person does something HoSworthy, the "bosses" in gaming terms or mods come down and hit them through the plate to the dark shitty areas underneath, it's a similar thing with testing.

It's weird, much like my hometown in real life, sd.net customs are seen as evil to many outsiders, but it's my kind of evil, and I wouldn't trade it for the other kinds of evil like tk, or for more regulated ones.

Although, that was because the question made me imagine it, it was more a nebulous bbs "home" idea before i put it in more imaginative terms.

Like a net cafe only one that's spread across the world.

To my conscious mind, I know it's a web board, but it feels like just another computer program. You're all just part of the program. AI simulations designed to provide conversation. Weird huh?

I see it as a giant building, with differant area's, and huge rooms full of archives.

a dark empty room where unsuspecting victims sit alone in a circle of light. glowing eyes exist in the darkness beyond the light and occasionally the chattering or screeching of monkeys can be heard. From time to time lights will come on showing girly mags and pr0n tapes in the background to tease you to step out of this protective circle. Every now and then should you attempt to approach the circle you will get feces thrown at you from every conceivable angle while monkeys screech in the background and proceed to devour your brain-meats. . . .oh wait, that's BotM . . .not the webboard at large. or is it? *tries to decide*

A nice bookstore with lots of coffee tables with a dungeon in the back (HoS) and a few parts of the store that are filled with sexual material.

It's like... a bunch of boxes on top of each other. Maybe like a big building somewhere, only people walk around with ridiculous amounts of weaponry. An office block, even, everyone has their own cubicles and they walk around invading other cubicles, and some people push theirs together to form grounps, and there are different floors for each forum... I dunno, I have a hard time imposing a fantasy realm on a board which is at best a whole lot of writing everywhere.

A sprawling metropolis with at least twelve architectural schools of thought in place(Coruscanti Skyhooks sore up next to a castle, Trek buildings nestle against manhattan skyscrapers, etc.). The vs. Forums are the bombed-out portions of the city.
