Quite how that happened, I don't know. But it's yet more evidence that the skull and brain can take serious shit without ill effects.

A FULLY AUTOMATIC NAILGUN? What could possibly be the justification for one of those? Who the fuck besides RoboCop or the Terminator could use a fully automatic nail gun with any degree of practicality? Also, where can I buy one?

Jumping Jesus Jellybeans...ocuh.

Though yeah, it shows the body/brain can take a lot but I doubt anyone wants to be the next reciepent.

Some years ago, there was a worker that got a thick metal rod incrusted into his skull. Lost some parts of his brain, but survived, with radical behaviour alteration. Can't remember much details, but the pictures were quite impressive. I was at first conviced it was a hoax, but it appears it was not.

 "HOLY SHIT" the guy is lucky to survive this, and are they sure it was really an accident and not an atempt to kill him :?

HOLY GOD...did you see that x-ray?!? JEEZ man, I"m surprised his vision isn't destroyed, as well as his basic motor functions like digestion and bladder...

The small cross-section of the nails must've aided in his survival. Unlike a bullet which can go at high sub to fairly high supersonic speeds and be in a larger calibre, the nail won't spin and disrupt the tissue as it passes through it.

Most headshot wounds from guns lead to death from extreme haemorrhaging and not so much the liquification of the brain tissue.

you could tell that by the angle, these are straight in, or just about. only someone standing behind him could aim so straight

I'd swear i heard something similar about this awhile back, except it was with a single nail. either way, eesh. that's gotta hurt. :?

Only the nails going in. The brain doesn't have any sensory nerve cells and so he wouldn't feel half a dozen metal nails in his skull.

The other nice thing about nails is they tend to go between things rather then through them. This causes less damage to the brain as well.

IIRC, many nailguns fire when pressed against a surface in addition to when the trigger is pulled. The article said that he fell, so it's possible that the nailgun landed on the back of his head and began firing away when the "barrel" hit his skull, before it itself slipped to the ground.

Bugger- althrough the afct that they didn't pass through would mean only the things directly in the path of the nail would be damaged- the frontal lobe looks alright, so there wouldn't be extensive debilitating brain damage.

It just slipped and went off? SIX TIMES? thats like saying "I'm sorry officer the gun sliped out of my hand and shot him in the head 9 times."

You mean six times.

Lucky guy. I swear the impact locations and description of it being an accident sound all too much like what would happen in a close-range nailgun war at a construction zone.

Brings back memories of the idiot construction workers on my house in cali. To save time the workers bypassed the contact interlocks on the nailguns so they could fire the nails into things at a distance. On several occasions some of the brighter ones on the roof would take shots at the workers doing the floor, who would fire back. It was hillarious to watch and listen to, and looked like a shitload of fun, but my family was always amazed no one got sent to the hospital with nails in his head.

Yeah, because not every part of the brain is essential for life, or even for their designated functions. There is a serious amount of plasticity and redundancy built into the brain.

However, you can't say there won't be ill effects. I only see one X-Ray, so I can't be too sure about the trajectory. Getting hit in the spinal cord is no laughing matter. Though once again, depending on the trajectory it might have just sliced some of the white matter tracts.

Though I'd be more worried about the three that looks like they went into the skull.

The bottom one, once again depending on the trajectory, can't see. It looks like it ripped through his cerebellum and mid brain. The cerebellum, fine he can live without, but the mid-brain is a scary place to be hit. That's where a lot of sensory and motor information is relayed through or originates and you have a lot of cranial nerves running around there.

The one above it, looks like it probably hit maybe through the occiptal region. Maybe his eye sight might be affected. But it goes all the way back into, at least maybe the ventricular regions. All again, depending on the trajectory which I can't make out. But rest assured, there are important $hit in the middle of that, unless it's running laterally though the temporal lobes.. then we just gotta be worried about some seizures and possibly some more psychological damaging as well.

The one that worries me the most from that X-ray is the one going in from the side, top. It looks like it's definitely hitting the at the level of the thalamus area or even corpus collosum.

So yeah, miracle he lived. But you can't say no ill effect. We have to wait and see.
