Australian Food Question

OK, so I read Terry Pratchett's book, the Last Continent- a tale clearly set in a joking version of Australia. One of the things he mentions in this book is an Ecksian (Ecksecksecks is his name for his fictional Australia analogue) delicacy, called a meat pie floater- a meat pie, upside-down in a bowl of pea soup, with tomatoe sauce poured over it. Now, I'm a big fan of exotic food and, upon reading about this Meat Pie Floater, I promptly wanted one.

Now, I live on the literal opposite side of the world from Oz, in faroff new Jersey, and I don't know much about the continent. Here's my question- Does the Meat Pie Floater exsist? And if so, how can I get one in the States?v

Just try and prepare it? Doesn't sound awfully complicated...

I'm a college student, for chrissakes. They don't even make meat pies in Jersey, and I sure as hell don't know how to make one for myself.

Look, you know what?. I'm a godawful cook, beyond pasta and reheating chinese food, I'm bloody hopeless. I just want to purchase a genuine Australian meat pie floater, ok? I don't even know it it's a real food!

Gah.

turns out a meat pie floater is indeed real. i'll do some more digging to see if they're available stateside.
yahoo wrote:Pie floater The apotheosis of the meat pie; a "pie floater" is an inverted meat pie swamped in mashed green peas and tomato sauce; found especially in South Australia. Floaters can be surprisingly good, or horrible enough to put you off both pies and peas for life.

Sorry kids, but that's rating on the negative side of the appeal factor. :x

Beef pot pie? Yum.

Split pea soup? Yum.

Tomato sauce? Meh.

All together in a bowl? Bleccchhh!

Dont' ask me why this is appealing. It's probably my strong Eastern Europen heritage- I love boild pork and sauerkraut, for instance. Weird food is generally pretty attractive to me.

I'm having pork with sauerkraut tonight, wierd. :D

Bavarian style kraut, though, plain harsh stuff staight from the can is nasty.

I love my mom's Sauerkraut and pork. It smells godawful cold, but when you heat it up.... MMMM.... It's incredible. Here's to ridiculous foreign foods!

I can indeed attest to the fact floaters exist here. I've seen them served down the street.

Well, have you had one? What are they like?

(this is somewhat of an obsession of mine)

It's a shame for me to admit it, but this is the first I've ever heard of a pie-floater. But it does sound... appealing.

Still if you want genuine Aussie delicacy you should try putting vegemite on your sandwich.

... I'll pass on the vegemite, thanks a lot! It probably has vitamins in it or something....

Meat pies, if you can't be bothered to make your own, can be ordered from Aussie catalogs here in the states. Give me a sec to look one up, if you're really that interested. Honestly, though, they're not that hard to make from scratch. But, you are a college male, so...I'll look up that online catalog.

And remember, their tomato sauce = our ketchup.

Ketchup, tomatoesauce, whatever. I MUST HAVE ONE!

Oh, and thanks!
