Gangs of New York

I just survived Gangs of New York.
Did *anyone* like this turd?
It was one of the most boring flicks in my life. And the most annoying thing about it was that it had short bursts of Lord of the Rings soundtrack pop up.
Gah....
*goes off to burn out eyes*

I heard it was crappy too.
/me adds GoNY to his 'List of Movies to Avoid AT ALL COSTS' which includes, Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, Titanic, Passion of the Christ, and one or two others...

I fail to see how you can pass judgement unless you've seen it.
I don't fancy PotC, but I certainly wouldn't say for certain it was crap unless I saw it.
You never know, you may just like some of these films you cast off with a fleeting friend based review.

I thought Gangs of New York was quite good, especially Day-Lewis' performance.

I saw the movie previews a million times. Nine hundred ninety nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine times too many!

Reminds me of Solidus from MGS2.

I thought it was pretty good.
Though the leads didn't do that great a job, even though they both acted decently, they were overshadowed by New York and especially Bill the Butcher.
I think that for some people, the thought the movie was really crappy because of the hype and what not surrounding the film. Kind of like what happened to Waterworld.
Not a horrible picture, but not as bad as people think it is.

Meh, I liked it. The best part was the way the movie ended (SPOILERS [maybe]:
With the whole logo showing up, we got to joke, "Well DAMN, that was THE LONGEST intro EVER!"
Oh, and it had balls to show the WTC! )
I thought it was good, and showed one true fact of life, IMO (SPOILERS possibly again:
Don't fuck with the military during a riot. ![Twisted Evil ](./images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif)
).

The ending of Gangs in New York is incredibly powerful. The Hands that Built America is a great song. And my eyes watered up when they showed you-know-what in the very last shot.

I loved it, though I thought the DVD release was weak... (you mean I have to switch disks? WTF?) Daniel Day-Lewis puts in a compelling performance, and di Caprio and Diaz--er, well, they perform to the best of their ability. The supporting roles were very well done, and I think that and the direction/cinematography really made the movie.

The film had amazing atmosphere, and truly succeeded at creating a tactile, textured world for the viewer. Unfortunately, it didn't really have a story, and didn't really go anywhere. The film exists solely as an exercise in the visualization of 19th century New York.

Shifting the focus of the movie from a revenge/romance tale for Amsterdam might have helped.

I thought the attention to detail in this movie was amazing. I don't know if thats really how people dressed, those plaid pants look like a 70's nightmare.
But at the end of the show I was wondering what the point was?

Of course it did, it had the story of Priest Vallon, Bill the Butcher, Boss Tweed, and Walter McGinn (BBredan Gleeson's character). It would have been a great movie had it been about them - the old folks - without the stupid DiCaprio story.

Meh, they stretched it out too long. If they'd have edited it down a bit, time wise, it would have been better. Towards the end, I was just wishing that it would end.

I love that movie. I also happen to be half Irish.
Disturbing that Di Caprio looks a little like me in that flick...Just because of similiar ancestry (Irish/Italian I am) and the facial hair. Ugh...
But yeah, that movie would have been average at best without Day-Lewis. I read some shit about him, he listened to an old recording of Walt Whitman to try and get the accent right, and played Eminem to prepare for his role.
I read roughly 1/4 of the book
Five Points...Believe it or not, life in 19th century NYC was WRETCHED compared to the movie's portrayal! Let's just say that's not supposed to be mud and dirt you see in the streets!
And that whole romance subplot was shit...

That movie had no idea what it wanted to be, first it was a murder mystery just shy of film noir, then it got phyco-drama on you, then it turned 'When Harry met Sally' and ended with a sci fi ala Total Recall.
When it was done, I was just confused as to what the hell I just watched. Penelopy Cruz's tits weren't that great to save the show. IMO, naturally.

I didn't mind GoNY. Had some good violence in it, and made a good recreation of what I'd consider C19th NYC to be like.
I learned this is not a good first date movie.

Gangs of New York, for me, is in the same catagory as movies like Death to Smoochy: I think I liked them a lot, but I'm not sure if I actually did, or if they just exceeded my expectations.
But yea, I enjoyed it.

I remember a bunch of friends gathered in another friend's house to watch this on DVD. Up to the point where the young'un tries to kill the bad guy, we were bored to tears, dozing on the couch, until someone said "let's play Tekken instead!"
I jumped and say "Yes! That's a good idea!". And I hate Tekken.
