This morning (Singapore time) US police investigating the case of the elusive sniper announced that the car seized from the blue Caprice car owned by John Allen Muhammad matched the bullets in the sniper killings.
Said Mr Michael Bouchard of the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms: "The weapon seized from the vehicle occupied by Muhammad has been forensically determined to be the murder weapon involved in the shootings."
Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose said John Allen and his teenage companion were now considered suspects in the case in which ten have been klled and three seriously injured since Oct 2.
Earlier, on condition of anonymity, FBI officials said that they had told US president George Bush that they thought they had caught the sniper.
Police had all the while been looking for a white van, which, they believed, was being used for the killings.
But on Wednesday, the police asked the public to look for a blue Chevrolet Caprice. ironically, the police were tipped off about John Allen and his car by a driver of a white van near a rest area.
Law enforcement officials said security officials may have missed a chance to catch the men just six days after the shooting started.
At that time authorities were searching for a white van because witnesses reported seeing one at some shooting sites.
The blue Caprice discovered today was believed to have been approached in Baltimore by police who found Muhammad and Malvo sleeping on OCt 8, the day after a 13-year old boy was wounded as the eighth victim of the sniper, the sources said.
The two were allowed to go, although their names were put into an information data bank in Baltimore, the sources said.
Said one high-ranking source: "Evryone was looking for a white van with white people." ---- Wire Service
