Did this board have Good Old Days?

It's late, and I've been whiling away another warm summer night in my basement, browsing this hive of scum and villiany. Perusing the archives and reading about the history of ASVS and the early days of the Trek/Wars debate, it feels almost as if we modern SDnetizens are living in the fat, quiescent period, built upon foundations laid in ages past by an aristocracy of heroes, including most noticably Mike Wong, the board dounder. Hell, it seems almost like once upon a time, there were mighty flame-wars which spanned the heavens of STvs.SW, debates which raged unabated through the electronic hallways. Trolls invaded en masse, and brave counterattacks were launched.

Now, it seems pretty quiet- almost a peaceful hamlet, where the only threats are the occaisional vitriolic troller, rude poster, or psychotic nutcase of the Stewart variety.

So, my question is, to those long-standing members of the board: Was there a golden age? Has it ended?

Well, Friday nights used to be happenin' back when I first joined, and people used to be less judicious with their flames, too.
Dunno if that counts as "The Good Old Days", but things have changed a bit over time.

Depends on whether you consider having trolls like Darkstar, Azeron and Arminius on the board as a 'golden' age...

Right now it feels like I'm watching the twilight of a once-mighty civilization.

Nah, not a twilight, just a maturing, and an age of peace. Twilight starts when you get less than 20 posts a day.

Put it this way.. it may be sundown on one side of the world, but that just means that it's sunrise on the other.

Though, I know what you mean. Wish I could've caught ASVS sooner. :(

A golden age, you say?
Yes there once was a golden age of Flame, when ICS was brand new, and trolls lined up by the dozens to do battle with long standing memebers of this board, people like Wong, Ossus, SirNitrim, His Divine Shadow, Grand Admrial Thrawn, myself and others not mentioned here lined up to do battle with first Trolls
Like Darkstar, Shadow, and even for a time Alyeska who later when on to become a moderator, Then the others Sith God, and ol'd almost lovable Priest(Loveable like one loves those that are dependable moronic)

And then lol the invasions, WCOTC and the Elite Fitness people and the Spacebattles folks plus half a dozen others to small to mention here
All during SD.Nets golden age
(Which of course I define as ending at the point I had a thousand more posts than the next person down on the top down list as I lend at glorious number 1 on the post count list... Largley maintined by random deleting of old threads by I-88, Sea Skimmer and verilon)

The SWvsST debate was mostly done when this board was formed.

This is the Golden Age- we've built up a reputation and I doubt any major invasions will be launched against or by us for worries of stability. We're stable, and full of interesting debates and flamewars, and the occasional troll provides great entertainment.

Maybe the SD.net should be considered as the next step in the evolution of ASVS?

I've always thought of it that way. SD.Net is just ASVS with more people, more organization, more sex, no USENET spam, and moderating.

I wouldn't say that there was a "Good Old Days" on this board, but there was a time when things wre different. David had more posts than anyone, members that rarely come by now were active posters, currently active members that we wonder how this forum could live without weren't registered, there were no "Artwork and Photos", "News and Politics", "Gaming and Computers", "Pure Star Trek", and "Fantasy" Forums, and John Clark, User099, and Sith God trolled the forums.

Pehaps in a few years, all of this will be considered "The Good Old Days".

In the early days of the board I used to lurk the forums. There was a lot of action going on. Numerous trolls like Azeron, Arminius, Darkstar etc invaded the place.

Bean, had you bothered to read my history here you would have noted that my very first posts here at SD.net was in defense of my reputation because people were slandering my name and perpetuating lies about me.

I believe the "good old days" were when we had targets. Now we have to flame each other more often than not, which can lead to hurt feelings.

The best of times is when you have someone like, dare I say it, RSA who will absorb flame after flame, puffing up all the more, drawing more attention to himself, bringing the entire board together in an effort to argue and flame him into oblivion.

Now we just get pure trolls, and while those are amusing for a time they aren't persistant or wordy enough to really become big targets.
