Well, in 1 year this day, Star Wars Episode III will come out. This got me thinking, and I have created a list the best movie every year over the last 30 years (twice my age). Any changes/suggestions?

1988 - Die Hard
1989 - I can't decide. At all. It's National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation/Back to the Future 2/
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade/Batman
1990 - Dances with Wolves
1991 - Terminator 2: Judgement Day
1992 - Patriot Games
1993 - Jurassic Park
1994 - Clear and Present Danger/Forrest Gump
1995 - Goldeneye
1996 - Mission: Impossible
1997 - Men in Black/Tomorrow Never Dies
1998 - Saving Private Ryan
1999 - The Matrix
2000 - Gladiator
2001 - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Tonari no Totoro ("My Neighbor Totoro" in English) was released in 1988.

I'd say that wins over your choice.

Bah. I saw that in Japanese class. Maybe it was due to the lack of subtitles, but I didn't follow it at all.

I absolutely loved the movie, even when I didn't understand most of it. FYI, it is coming out on DVD this August.

(However, if you wanted a *cough*nonofficalsub*cough*, there's sources out there.)

What about Tango and Cash for 1989?

Not a bad list overall, but I have several changes:

1975 - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
1978 - Midnight Express
1979 - Apocalypse Now
1984 - This Is Spinal Tap
1988 - Grave of the Fireflies
1989 - I'd give it to The Last Crusade
1990 - Goodfellas
1991 - Silence of the Lambs
1992 - Reservoir Dogs
1994 - Pulp Fiction (you MUST make this change, Mia Wallace demands it)
1995 - Ghost in the Shell
1996 - Fargo
1997 - Jackie Brown
2002 - The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers
2003 - Kill Bill Vol. 2

How the hell can you say 1988 was a crap year for movies? One of the greatest action movies of all time came out that year. Here's the changes I would make:
1982 - ST2/First Blood (toss up between these two, I'd say)
1988 - Die Hard (Yipee-ki-yay, mother fucker!)
1997 - Chasing Amy (Kevin Smith's best flick to date)
2002 - Spider-Man (I mean, come on, AoTC was better than Ep I, but not better than Spider-Man)

Yes it was.

I like your list. The only one to remove is "2002 - Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones." That movie sucked.

The reason I didn't include that is because Totoro is a better movie in that you want to watch it often. Too much Grave of the Fireflies, and you'll kill yourself.

I have memories of ALL those movies at their release times. Godfather Pt. II is a bit hazy, but I remember wondering what the fuck a "Godfather" was, and why my mom was excited about going to see the movie...(She adored Pt. I, and couldn't wait for Pt. II)

For a kid, the impact of Jaws the summer it came out was incredible, everything, and I mean everything, was an attenpt to relate to it. People were afraid of swimming pools, literally.
Jaws created the summer blockbuster trend that has given us such gems as The Mummy Returns, DAMN YOU JAWS!

I bought that one at BestBuy a year and a half ago. It has English and Japanese language tracks on it, the only problem with it is that it's pan&scan. Just to let you know if you don't feel like waiting

Die Hard was 88? I thought it was 87. Oh well.

The title sucked but the movie was pretty good. It was better than TPM.

How's the saying go? "Grave of the Fireflies is a movie everyone should see... ONCE.

You probably don't want to watch GoTF more than 4 times throughout your entire life. I have the DVD; it's an excellent DVD, CPM did a really good job with it, but by god even the special features are depressing.

No. You didn't hear me. It's not on DVD yet.

(The FOX edition of Totoro is horrible. The "subtitles" are just the direct english script, which is not accurate. In fact, it gives dialouge that is contradictory to the Japanese dialouge in parts. Wait for the Disney one.)

I'd have to say die hard beats Totoro i've seen the good version (some what illegally i'll admit), and I did not like it as much, its an ok movie to watch once or twice but I've seen better.

Well of course it was better than TPM, but that's not saying much. That's like saying getting kicked in the nuts is better than being castrated.

Seriously? I thought even non-comic book fans liked that movie. Learn something new every day, I guess. Anything specific that turned you off, or just the whole idea in general?

I think it's a good movie but I didn't find it all that great. I think a lot of it was the main cast (Peter and especially MJ), and the Green Goblin suit didn't work for me either.

About the only thing that I though was an improvement over other versions (comic or cartoon) was Uncle Ben getting killed outside the building where Peter could have stopped the criminal. There was less coincidence/fate involved with it there.
