Yet another piece of the '70's returns, my friends.
CNN reports that TimeWarner has released the first VHS and DVDs of this country humor favorite. The show itself ran from 1969 to 1997, and featured down-home humor, lovely ladies, country music, and over the years some of the top stars of Nashville, TV & Movie stars, and even Senator Robert C Byrd made guest appearances.
" 'Hee Haw' won't go away," said Roy Clark, host or co-host of the show for its entire run. "It brings a smile to too many faces."
Charleston DailyMail wrote:"I will be coming to you direct from Cornfield County, and I tell you, there are some real birds down there," Byrd said in a promo for the show, typical of (HeeHaw's) down-home humor.
Byrd was invited in 1979 after he recorded a record of his own, "Mountain Fiddle," which features standards like "Turkey in the Straw" and "Cumberland Gap." He reprised those songs, and more, on the program.
Byrd, who then was Senate majority leader, was a regular viewer of the show and welcomed the invitation.
He and his wife Erma traveled to Nashville for the taping. Erma Byrd can be seen, sitting on a hay bale, clapping in time to her husband's fiddle. Two shows, which aired Sept. 15, 1979, and Nov. 10, 1979, were recorded in the same session.
"I enjoyed it tremendously," Byrd said.
I know that there's more than one 'OldTimer' that remembers this show as fondly as I do, just as I know that some of you young wippersnappers are going to ask "HeeHaw? What's that?"

Oh can you remember that trip to the city,
That big fancy rest'ront in down town New York?
The menu was big, but prices were bigger,
You ordered champange, and I popped my cork!
Chorus*
Where of where, are you tonight?
Why did you leave, me here all alone?
I searched the world over, and I thought I'd found true love,
You met an other, and THHHHHPT! you was gone.
You took out your false teeth, your wig and your glasses.
You were just scattered all over the place.
I wanted to kiss you and hug you so tightly.
I guess that I would have if I'd found your face.*
I went to your house at three in the morning.
You had all them curlers and junk in your hair.
You would not have scared me and I'd not have run so,
If you had not looked like you'd wrestled a bear.*
I told you my darlin' you looked like a gopher.
Made you so mad, you haven't spoke since.
But tell me my darling if you ain't got buck teeth.
How do you eat apples through a picket fence?*
When I picked you up for our date last weekend.
You looked so pretty in your satin and lace.
But when I bent over and started to kiss you,
you popped a pimple all over my face!*
"Gloom, dis-paaair, agony on me, (WHooooa)
Deep dark de-pression, excessive misery, (Whhhoa)
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all, (Whhhoa)
Gloom, despair, and agony on me!
Yes, if you remember these, and other songs from Hee Haw, you are of my generation.

*sings*
"If it weren't fer baaad luck, I'd have no luck at all,
gloom, despair, and agony on me!"
I remember when Hee-Haw was the ONLY thing resembling entertainment on TV on a saturday night.
I hated it!

The babes were wearing "Daisy Dukes" years before the "Dukes of Hazzard."
Drool.
At the time they were called "Daisey Mays," after the "Lil Abner" cartoon character.

I never knew 'HeeHaw' was an actual show. I thought it was just made up for the purpose of building redneck jokes. You learn something new every day I guess.

Interesting fact: Elvis was a huge fan of "Hee Haw" and actually wanted to appear on it, but his controlling manager, Colonel Parker, wouldn't hear of it. That might be one of the smarter moves the Colonel made for Elvis...

Dunno about that, Hee Haw was a very popular show, it could ave payed off for him.

Yeah, but it would have contributed to Elvis' image of being a hick. Although him appearing as a musical guest could have been appropriate. He's in the country Hall of Fame afterall... You're right though, that show was HUGE hit.

I think it would be interesting to see a map of the United States showing how many HeeHaw DVDs/Videos were bought in what areas.

"Hee Haw" was the country equivalant of "Laugh in."
Shows like "Mr. Ed," My favourite Martian," UFO," were on, and "Hee haw" is improbable?
Good gods man, there has been stupid TV since there was TV.
My Mother the car. Car 54. Shrimpenstien. The list goes on.

I had the record, with Karate man, on side B.
The Shrimpenstein song:
What a sight,
In the laboratory, late, one night,
There began the story,
lightning flashed and something missed,
a good old crazy scientist,
had dropped a bag of jelly beans, into his Frankenstein machine,
AND, Shrimpenstien,
was created, in just half the time,
that it takes to make a Franenstein, and so you see,
he's half the size of you and me,
and though hell try, he can't be mean,
because he's made of, jelly beans!

Cool!
Another childhood favorite on DVD.
If you don't like Hee-Haw, you must be some kind of Communist.

It's hard to like or dislike something you didn't even know existed (until I read the thread, that is). I guess that still makes me a commie
