Veering off-topic and hijacking threads

Why do we do it? Any answers? It seems that many times we "hijack" threads, but don't know that we do it until we look at the topic name and see what's going on in the thread...I've done this a couple of time (apology) and am not proud of it, but am wondering why we do this. Does anyone have any ideas?

It's a common occurrence on usenet. It's hard to stay on one conversation track when a new interest comes up. It's a bit more of a nuisance here because you need a moderator to diverge the topics manually.

Yes, because obviously this is the only place topic drift happens anywhere!

I really hate to do that. I don't want to screw somebody else up.

Yet it happens.

Ah well.

Veering off-topic is graduall changing the subject, but it can happen in as few as 3 replies. Hijacking is when one person intentionally changes to topic to express their own views. I'm sure some of our trolls did this.

Azeron did.

When you post something that doesn't answer the OPs question, you KNOW it doesn't, and it's just there to provoke a reaction, it is hijacking. That's what mods are for.

Perhaps something relates to the subject or none whatsever and the poster has that urge to let it out.

That's what the HoS and Test forums are for.
