stupid home depot

so i went to Home Depot last night with my wife. We bought stuff for the house... paint, primer, dropcloths, brushes, rollers, sandpaper, stuff like that. So we gather up all our stuff and the guy mixes up our paint. i roll the cart over to the checkout lane. there was one cashier open, ( and three automated self-checkouts which people were avoiding like the bubobnic plauge) her line was long, and she was fucking MISERABLE. We finally get up to her and she begins to ring us out. She rigns up all of the tools and whatnot, then the big 5 gallon drum of primer. when she gets to the paint, she fucks up and only rings up 3 of the 13 one gallon cans ($20 each). I didn't realize it at the time. Well she gives me the total, and i think to myself well that can't be right so i ask her: Thats it? you sure its right? Well the bitch proceeds to look at me like i just killed her dog or something rolls her eyes and hisses 'Yeah it's right'. Ok, sorry. I hand her my card, pay, and get out of there. When I get to the car I check the receipt and see that she DID fuck up and gave me $200 worth of free stuff. Now had she not been a bitch, and bothered to check for mistakes when i pointed them out, i would have happily paid. Oh well, I tried. What would you have done in my situation?

I have no patience for people who are rude like that. Might have given her another chance, but if she was really a bitch, and I could get away with it, I might send her the receipt with the wrong part circled. Then again, that'd seem pretty stupid. Oh well...

I would have used self checkout, those things are pretty sweet.

Maybe she's about to be fired and this is how she gets her revenge against the boss.

Hmmm....I would have gone back to her. She's got no excuse for taking out her bad day on you so she's an incompetent bitch, but it's the right thing to do.

i tried to tell her the total was wrong, and she respnded like she was going to bite my head off! The bill was still over $350, even with her mistake.... and it's not like there was any manager or another cashier in sight.

I'd have done the same thing.

You pointed it out and tried to help her and she bit your head off. It's just too bad that the cost of the free stuff she gave you didn't show up on her register so she'd have to answer for it.

I really try to be honest about things like that, but had I been treated badly I would have done the same thing.

I avoid Home Depot whenever I can. They never have exactly what you need and when they do it's up in the rafters, and there's always one guy trying (or not trying) to look after customers in three different departments. And their prices really aren't that great--I pay less in local lumber yards and hardware stores.

She fucked up, you tried to correct, she refused. I wouldn't feel terribly bad because she refused the help. It's not like you deliberately set out to screw them after all.

Home Depot is a great place to buy something when you know what you want and what you need. We've bought all our light fixtures, electrical, plumbing, doors, windows, trim, and molding from them. Their stocks are incredible and we've got exactly what we needed. It really is a good store, bad employees excluded. Some try to help, some don't.

As would have I. I don't understand why people avoid these things...they are incredibly easy to use and faster IMO....as long as you aren't behind someone who is slow.

She was probably pissed because no one was using them, and causing her more work. I know I would be.
OT: You tried to correct it, she told you it was fine, you win $200 in free paint. End of line.

The right thing to do would be to get the manager, IMHO. You're really taking money from them, and not the cashier. If you owned a store, you'd probably like the customers to inform you of an incompetent cashier.
Although in the same circumstance I'd probably do what you did since I'd be frustrated and would just want to leave. I've had similar things happen (never to the tune of $200..
![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
) and I've corrected a number of times, but others I've let it slide. I think it depends on how much I like the store...
Legally I think you're in the wrong, since you know you didn't pay for the goods (although they really can't arrest you since they don't even know you have it). It'd be the same as finding a million dollars in your bank account, you know its not yours and you're not allowed to spend it.

You brought it to their attention, they told you to leave anyway. That's all you are required to do. If they come after you and demand that you return the paint, you are legally obligated to give it back, but it's their own goddamned fault for having shit customer service.
A store manager should notice when lineups are backing halfway into the store and take corrective action. This store manager obviously didn't; it should come as no surprise when errors occur, and it should be on his head. Managers have to learn that you don't just overload a person and then expect that person to be totally error-free.
As for Home Depot in general, they're all right to buy things from, but try to return something. I have a contractor acquaintance who said that they added several steps to their returns process in order to make it less convenient and discourage people from returning stuff. Sure enough, it takes a long time to return anything and there are usually tedious lineups at the return desk.

Man, I would not voluntarily go back and deal with such rudeness. It's her idiot fault for being cocky, and you already brought it back to her attention. Let her suffer the consequences.

Richly deserved as suitable punishment for the bad service. Personally I'd be tempted to punish them a bit more and go straight back and see if I couldn't get another 13 pots at the same "discount".

I find your return experience fascinating. The local Home Depot is bar none the best store I have ever been to on returns.

As for the primary topic, Lord Wong said it back.
You did what you legally had to do. HD can deal with it.
On to the returns and Customer Service
It really depends on the HD. The one by my place is rather nice. Good staff, good service. I gave a vague description of what I needed at one, and 5 minutes later, the service-person was handing it to me. (I recognized it, in this case, it was a johnson adjustable angle square)
As for the returns, against, depends on the store. The one up here is reasonably fast. Bring your recepit, and if it's in the package, it's basically in and out.
It might be different for large orders, or changed in the last few months, but last time, I had no problems.
Mike, tell your contractor friend to try the Home Depot in Oshawa. It's on Taunton Road. He might have better luck

Not always. At some places the clerk is supposed to call for backup himself.

The local Home Depot here used to be excellent in that respect too. Not any more. I actually threw something out a while ago in disgust because I got to the Home Depot and saw the return line snaking out the door, and figured the aggravation of waiting in line was worse than just eating the $10.

You did the right thing, Crackpot.
It's the employee's fault, and not yours.

I'd have done the same thing. If I'm at a big chain like Home Depot or McDonald's or something, there isn't an amount they could accidentally give me that I'd feel compelled to give back. I figure, the company's not going to miss it, and if the employee gets fired, oh well, there are a million more retail jobs they can get (and speaking as a retail employee, the job is hard, but not so hard that you should fuck up like that).
On the other hand, if I'm at a Mom 'n' Pop place, I'll stop to return even an extra quarter, because with them, there isn't as much room for error as with a multi-billion dollar corporation. Plus, the only mom and pop stores I go to kick ass, so I extra want to help them out.
