I was talking to a friend of mine earlier, and he's basically a big sissy and won't ever try anything new. I mean anything. Food, entertainment, places to hang out, people to hang with, etc. As a person who likes to continually challenge myself, this aggrevates me sometimes. I can understand if he knows he doesn't like to do a certain activity, but if he's never tried it or anything like it, how can he possibly know? And what fun can it be to just stay in his safe little bubble for the rest of his life?

Anyway, my question to all of you is (although you're also welcome to answer any of the rhetorical ones above), what will you never, ever try because you're convinced you wouldn't like it, and what would you love to try but haven't had a chance to yet? Would you take a 2-week vacation without booking ahead? Ride a rollercoaster that intimidates you? Go whitewater rafting? Run for mayor? Go back to college? Eat ground-up cicadas? Ask someone out even though you're shy? Travel to the ends of the earth with strangers? Walk a tightrope? Rob a bank?

What's the most extreme new thing you'd try? Where do you draw the line?

On new things I want to do. Let's see...
-I want to go to Ibiza, Spain and several places in Italy. I also want to go to Australia.
-I still want to join the military eventually.
-I want to take up kayaking and skydiving.

I'm willing and eager to try out most things that other people safely enjoy and overcome my inhibitions, even if that activity appears to be really gross (eating dried fish heads), really silly(ballroom dancing), or really intimidating(going on rollercoasters). Even if it's an activity I know I won't be interested in doing regularly, my sense of curiosity and my desire to facilitate pleasurable social experiences for those around me are my main two motives to get me to do things that would normally make me uncomfortable.

On a more abstract level, I think it's necessary for one to go to a new place or place oneself in a new environment at least once a week to keep oneself in the "swing of things."

In terms of the most extreme things I've done or tried for the first time, that would probably be the times I've abused my body in some pretty decadent ways for the sake of pleasure-seeking (goddamn NYC, always used to kick my ass).

That, or when I spontaniously packed up and moved to san diego for a few months.

- I always wanted to do a HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) parachute jump.
- Rock climbing always kinda held a bit of fascination for me, so scale some fairly easy cliff somewhere
- Fly at Mach 3+ (me piloting, not being a passenger)
- Join eco-challenge
- bungee jump

As you can see, I'm an adrenaline junkie. I am completely addicted to the rush I get on a rollercoaster. The stuff on this list is just extensions (somewhat big ones) of stuff I normally do.

But that doesn't mean I don't have limits. I just haven't gotten close enough to them to know exactly where they are.

Here's my list of things I won't do. I guess that means everything else is fair game (as I incriminate myself):

1. Anal sex is out of the picture. So is fisting or having more than one dick attempting to plunge into any of my orifices. I guess I'm just prude like that. This goes for almost all forms of bondage, S&M, etc.

2. Anything to deal with heights. Jumping out of planes, tight-rope walking, parachuting, hang-gliding and any other life threatening activity your devious little mind can come up with.

3. Eating live insects or any other small (or hey, even large) creature you can come up with. For some reason, I'm more comfortable eating from a dead carcass.

As far as most extreme, I have no idea. I guess I'd have to be ask first and check my mood of the day.

I'll try almost anything, as long as it doesn't involve bodily harm.

If I'll fly in a 40 year old KC-135 that isn't certified air worthy by the FAA doing belly flops over the Gulf of Mexico, then I'll do about anything.

Things that I won't do:

- Drugs: No way, ever.
- Cigarettes: Same deal, have never tried and never will
- Have sex with a guy: Again, no way.

Criminal activities like robbing banks etc are also out, but all the rest of the stuff and a lot that wasn't on the list in Zaia's first post is something that I'd do with relish. People who are afraid of trying new things annoy me.

Well, I'm extremely adventurous in certain areas. In terms of food and general entertainment, I'm very adventurous.

With food I'm particularly eccentric. So for example, my first experience with a Wolfgang Puck on a trip to California had me ordering a raw tuna steak with a side order of deep-fried alligator. My first experience with octopus was "Hey, I've never eaten an Octopus before!" Give me a bowl of boring stew and I'll say "mmm gulag stew" (said in a facetious way), then imagine I'm eating in Siberia, making any meal an enjoyable adventure. My mother never appreciated the gulag comment ... lol

Unfortunately, the area I live in is the complete opposite. If its not what they're used to then its "yuck. I don't even want to try that!" Try to find a nice restaurant for a date who doesn't even like spagetti sauce because its a vegetable.

But, I don't enjoy risking personal safety for thrills. So I have no desire to jump out of an airplane. Nor do I have any desire to try illegal drugs at least once *just to see*. Sports like mountain biking are cool because the risks are reasonable and under my control. But, but simple thrill sports are of no interest.

No I'd book and plan ahead. The destination doesn't bother me, as long as I can plan for that destination.

Yes. They are generally safe and the fear is irrational.

Yes, I grew up next to rafting area.

No, I don't want to be a politician.

Only for good reason. I wouldn't give up my current, rather good, job for the 'adventure' of college. Been there, done that. Its not new.

Yes, but its hard to do, as I'm shy. If I had no problem with it I wouldn't be shy!

If I knew where I was going first. I don't like losing control of my personal safety to complete strangers. I'm adventurous as long as I maintain some control over my destiny (not in the sense than I'm making the decisions, I actually like doing things I wouldn't normally have chosen to do, just as long as I know what's going on and I'm in the loop of things).

Yes. Only with a safety net.

No, my morals wouldn't allow me to do that.


Q: Where do you draw the line?

Risking of my personal safety just for a thrill. I'm not an adrenaline junky. It needs to be something tangeable for me to enjoy it. Like the skill involved in bike riding, rafting, or tightrope walking, and not just the danger. I'd agree to sky diving if it was for a job or other tangeable reason.

i'm willing to do new things, but only if there's minimal risk involved, either with actual pain or general unpleasant experiences. sexually, i'm pretty much as open minded as you could get. there isn't too much i'm not willing to do, except for things like beastiality, necrophilia, most of the more repugnant forms of sex. bodily fluids other than vaginal lube or semen is right out. (with of course spittle being acceptable). foodwise, well . . .i won't eat shellfish, and refuse to get drunk (my body doesn't seem to handle liquor too well). Rocky mountain oysters, given that i know what they are, i won't touch.

physically, there's some things i'll do and some things i won't. most water stuff i probably wouldn't given that i don't know how to swim very well. Skydiving i'd love to try, as well as actual rock climbing (with safety gear of course). there isn't a whole lot that i'm not willing to do provided it isn't suicidal, illegal or obviously idiotic.

As for my list, I will never:

• Rob a bank (or anything/anyone else, really)
• Do any type of drugs other than alcohol
• Sign up for a dating service
• Do anything sexual involving scat or snuff
• Kill anything/anyone intentionally (except for perhaps insects, and I usually don't kill them either)

The things I want to try but haven't yet:

• Skydiving
• Migrating to another country
• Visiting Antarctica
• Bungee jumping
• Flying an airplane (want to get my own pilot's license)
• Making composing/arranging a part-time job
• Group sex
• Driving across Canada and the U.S.

Things I have done that I know some of my friends would never do:

• Hot-air ballooning
• Living in another country for half a year (without a credit card)
• Driving fassssssst on a race track
• Spent a week bumming around California and Mexico with no plans or reservations
• Spent time on a tropical island that was in the middle of a coup d'état, and was kept safe at gunpoint.
• Rented a chalet in Québec
• Climbed a mountain in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan to get a good photo (not a big deal, but some of them sat out)
• Performed on stage at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall
• Driven 20 hours roundtrip in a 36 hour period to go to a barbeque (it was in Cape Cod)
• Drove from Baltimore to Salt Lake City

That's all I can think of at the moment...

I have recently done the one thing I was most scared of: I asked out my best friend. Yeah, I know some of you don't think it is a big thing, but for me it was very scary. And yes, it did turn out with a happy ending.

I can appreciate that. I've done similar things for games of paintball. Which is something else I do regularly despite the sometimes painful welts.

I like driving sometimes just for the adventure of going someplace, the farther I go the more adventurous it is. The time spent driving vs the reward doesn’t usually come into the picture. But, I usually need a destination or I wouldn't feel like I accomplished something (ie. went to top of mountain, instead of wondering around mountain aimlessly).
