Kentucky.
It's not Kentucky. Springfield is somewhere on the Pacific Coast. The town is by the ocean and the sun sets over the water. That's been consistent throghout the series run.

How? Kentucky has no ocean, nor desert...

I actually used to live in a Springfield until 2 years ago [Springfield, VA, in Northern Virginia].

It was stated in the "Behind the Laughter" episode that they were a "Northern Kentucky family".

So? That's where they origionated from, that doesn't mean that they couldn't have moved west.

And Captain Picard said that lasers won't penetrate the E-D's navigational deflectors. The undeniable visual evidence of the sun setting over the ocean near Springfield overrides anything some narrator said in an episode that's not part of the continunity anyway.

Northern Kentucky as in a state NAMED Northern Kentucky.

Yeah, it doesn't exist. That's the idea. :P

It's also got a gorge and large local forests. It is in a state where the capital is Capital City.

It should be noted that Kentucky does have a Springfield and a Shelbyville rather close to each other, although they aren't exactly neighbors.

One shouldn't be looking at the Simpsons for perfect geographic accuracy, though.

And don't forget the massive badlands with oilfields.

One of the running jokes in the whole series is that they've never pinned down where Springfield is. In the episode where they go to Brazil, Lisa's pen-friend says that he couldn't reply to her letters because he didn't know which state she was in.

And when they come back from Florida, they pull out a map of all the states they're persona non grata in. Every state on the map is crossed out.

I wouldn't worry too much about springfields location.

I remember I once figured out where Gotham City is from a guide that gave its distance from New York and Chicago. I forget where, though

And a mass shaped like Texas if part of the state Springfield is in. I guess when they say Springfield, USA, USA is the name of state as well. It's like a nation-state.

I thought part of the reason the Simpsons is set in Springfield is because Springfield is the most common city/town name in the US? :)

Not entirely true, it could also be in Florida.

Alternatively, not going by the map, it's down the street from the Simpson's house (Simpsons 14-20 'Brake my wife please') :D
