Post by Supreme_Warlord »

Hi,
I have noticed that there are a number of people here who are still studing at university. For the British members of this board, I just wanted to ask where you were.

As for me, I am studying Computer Science at University College London (UCL).

I was at Nottingham Trent, festering shithole that it was.

Should I cease work and go back to education, I'd probably go to the University of Nottingham, which is much nicer.

Hooray!

I did palaeobiology at UCL, and I'm returning there for my PhD.
I currently work in Computer Science at QMUL.

I am currently taking a year out with the plan being to finish the 3rd and final year from this September onwards. However, I have been at UCL since 1998 (long story) so if you care to mention some names I can try and remember if I met them along the way.

Haven't you left it just a teeny weeny bit too late?

IIRC correctly, most universities have already made offers by this stage.

Not too late, I can still get in before the final set of deadlines before the first round of clearing.

I was meant to be a medic (based on the fact that both my parents are doctors and it was my father's wish), so IIRC, I had to get my form in by the first week of November of the year before I finished my A-Levels (1997).

I ended up at UCL by way of clearing when the medical school interviewers realized that no amount of bullshitting and sucking up of my part could hide the fact that I just was not that interested in medicine.

Either way, good luck to you.

Sheffield Uni. It;s populated by very arrogant students, I don't like it.

Lancaster University, Bsc. Environmental Science - with this year being spent in the US in Oregon - heartily recommend it, gateway to most places, if you have the option, get over here... Alaska, Hawaii, California all within easy reach... it's been grand.

I'm not at university just yet but I thought I'd contribute :DD

I am starting at the University of Manchester in September, English Language with Lingusitics, which sould be fun. Two of my good friends are going to study something similar at Lancaster, which they keep *trying* to tell me is a superior university to Manchester

I'll decide in three years when we all have our degrees...

You'd be suprised at how stupid some doctors are. At best you can consider them people with master's degrees, sometimes not even that. One of the graduate assistants in one of my labs last semester had an appointment with a specialist. By the end of the appointment she had to explain why both his diagnosis and treatment were completely wrong and why. Left the poor guy completely dumbfounded.

That sounds like a great course. Mine's just called English but we do have linguistics related modules- in fact for one of my 3rd year subjects I'll be doing a module on the study of dictionaries :)

Does Manchester do modules on Old English- thats really fun.

Very good idea. I either didn't get or lost my accomodation form, and only realised around results day. Was pretty lucky to get uni accomodation I think. Not that its especially good accomodation.

Maple Bank is not really very good, for anyone who might be thinking about halls at Birmingham. Still, it's nice and cheap. (Or was this year, think its going up though.)

I'm at UMIST... Well at least until Project Unity happens and it merges with Manchester uni.
For example, suppose I wrote a book that within 30 years of the moon landing millions of people could be duped by bad science and endless hectoring into believing that it didn't happen... nah, can't do that, too unbelievable for a fantasy novel, right?--Terry Pratchett, The new Discworld Companion

Going Uni in Manchester must be great! As a Mancunian myself, I can safely say that I would have gone there if I didn't live here already [I got accepted by Manchester but I wanted to move away from home for a few years.]

Cambridge Uni is actually a collection of colleges which are pretty independent of each other but which share some resources, some of them are very good others less so. Though I must say my opinion of the place took a dive last year when they turned me down (though that decision probably improved Cambridge’s image to everyone who knows me).
ALI_G wrote:Sheffield Uni. It;s populated by very arrogant students, I don't like it.
I must disagree with you a little here Sheffield Uni has the nicest, most self-effacing bunch of students you could ever hope to meet. In related news I go to Sheffield Uni.

Ah, I still don't know whether I'm going to be based in Bloomsbury (UCL) or South Ken (NHM) next year.

And I can't sort out my accomodaton until I get back from the States, which means I'll be commuting from my parents for a while.
