Futurama vs. Family Guy

Post by FaxModem1 »

Which do think is a better show?

and why.

Edit:Almost forgot, I prefer Futurama, because I actually care about the characters, where on Family Guy, I wouldn't care if they lived or died.

I used to like Family Guy a lot more, but I think Futurama holds up better to repeat viewings now that I've seen each and every one a million times on Adult Swim. Probably from the better animation, and the fact that a lot of Family Guy's best jokes rely heavily on the "Where the hell did THAT come from?" factor.

Futurama is a better show. Family Guy may be funnier, but Futurama is a better show.

That too. A Family Guy ep that stopped being funny isn't worth watching, a Futurama ep that's not funny anymore usually is.

Precisely. In the same way that M*A*S*H* is a better program than Futurama, Futurama is better than Family Guy. The Futurama episode discussing God, with Bender being the God for those little asteroid guys, was a GREAT piece of television. There are doubtless funnier episodes of both Futurama and Family Guy, but I don't think either show produced another episode that matched that quality.

Sure. It's strongly correlated with the quality of a show, since most episodes of most shows are designed primarily to be entertaining. However, as I have just demonstrated, there are times when quality cannot be measured strictly in terms of entertainment. For a further example, hardly anyone will argue that a movie like "Independence Day," "Van Helsing," or "The Mummy" is better than "Schindler's List," but all three of those are more entertaining than the Oscar winner.

I enjoy both shows, but if I had to choose I would pick Futurama. Futurama had some really stand out episodes like "The Luck of the Fryish" and the Star Trek episode was better than all of B&B Trek put together.

And who could forget the episode where the aliens attacked the Earth because an episode of the Ally McBeal Parody "Single Female Lawyer" was interupted mid-brodcast by a black-out 1000 years earlier.

Futurama is also the only show I know of that made an "All your base..." joke.

I like Family Guy better; more funny. I also think its better than Futurama, seeing as how they're bringing the show back. At college, Family Guy is the only show that everyone watches constantly.

Futurama was much more fun, and lasting. Maybe it's the geek factor, but I just liked it. I never really did like Family guy, and although it had some funny moments. most of the time I actually got bored watching it and went to do something else. I have however stayed up till 4am watching futurama episodes on DVD at a friends house... more than once. And will likley do it again. Futurama is just great.

Family Guy is utterly hilarious, but most episodes are just a series of jokes barely held together by a story that could have come off the Plot-o-Matic. Once you've seen the jokes enough that they're not funny anymore, the episodes aren't very watchable. Whereas Futurama, being a Groening project, does tell a story, with the jokes weaved in. Overall, I prefer Family Guy, but not what I've seen every episode at least once, my preference is starting to shift. We'll see what happens when the new Family Guy episodes start coming out.

EDIT: And one thing Futurama doesn't do that Family Guy occasionally does is drag out a bad joke to the point it becomes excruciating (i.e., the infamous "Rocket Man" scene).

I find myself staying up to catch Family Guy. However I voted for Futurama. Pound for Pound it is the better show. Stewie and Brian are classic, and there really isn't a set of characters like them, (I'm actually watching Family Guy right now). The reply value is almost all in Futurama. The 'what-the-fuck' value Family Guy has sorta dies out after a while, which is sad, because on first viewing, you will split your damn side. Futurama seems to hold some quality humour. Maybe that's why the Simpsons have been on for so damn long.
