I'm finding it hard to browse the forum tonight, because I have to press Tab a few hundred times to go to links... because my mouse just gave up the ghost

My condolences on the death of your ...HID of choice (and doesn't this belong in G&C anyway?), but you may want to try un/replugging it (and, if its cordless, removing/replacing batteries & reinitiating the connection) before throwing it away (especially if it was an expensive one).
