I made a couple of internet purchases (non-pornographic thank you very much) and I get a phone call from Visa fraud division. Can they just puruse your accounts like that?

IIRC that's probably automated... their system noticed you made x dollars of purchases in y amount of time, requiring them to contact you and confirm you personally were using your card.

Most of the credit-card issuers now have automatic check for anomolous purchases. Sometimes legitimate stuff gets flagged so they'll call you just to make sure.

Some people consider it an extra "bonus" feature to have Visa notify them if there's some "unusual" activity on your card. It's supposed to help prevent you from getting screwed by someone getting ahold of your card or card number. This feature is often advertised on television.
If you haven't purchased things online with that card before or from those specific sites then they should have notified you just to make sure that it was really you who was doing the ordering.

I was just worried that in the future they may call and ask about large amounts of dollars going to Spearmint Rhino or something

As its has already been mentioned, you make a purcahse that got flagged by the company's software. It's a good thing, since they are looking out for you.
