Decadence..
If say, you were as rich as Bill Gates, all in cash assets and decided to live your life in decadence.. what will be your biggest joy in spending that money? Outside of buying women (or men)..
Setting up a massive charity Fund.
And fronting the cash for rebuilding the Temple Mount. Nothing like a little excitment in the Middle East, I say!

"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

Funding my own private army of mercenaries which I would use to set myself up as Emperor of some third-world country, of course.

Why rent mercenaries, when you can buy all that lovely equipment yourself and play with it.HemlockGrey wrote:Funding my own private army of mercenaries which I would use to set myself up as Emperor of some third-world country, of course.

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Use it to quit work and remain as a perpetual student. What greater joy is ther ein life than mastering a new skill or learning a new way of doing something? I think definately learning to cook and haveing a huge and well-stocked kitchen and some decent musical instruments would be cool- so would an Observatory and a whole lot of books.

I would donate some to charity, bank a significant portion, and spend the rest on a remote island in the middle of the Pacific. Preferably with a decent harem.

Become a political activist. 60 billion dollars would buy a lot of those "paid for by the foundation for <whatever>" political ads.

Fund political campaigns.
Putting money into research could still be stifled, and other activities are pointless.
But to erect actual change and push for people I feel are to promote what I believe should be done is cwertainly high on the list.
That and set up funds for arts and music.
And then do something about comics.

The best part is you can do both at once by buying up some mining corporation which operates in a third world country, the Congo is your best bet since it won't even be noticed, most of them have mercenary armies permanently on staff to protect the mines.HemlockGrey wrote:Funding my own private army of mercenaries which I would use to set myself up as Emperor of some third-world country, of course.
Personally I'd begin construction of an enormously large house (it needs to be to conceal the bunker building going on under it and act as a buster slab for it) with a huge garage and workshop attached to service my soon to be vast collection of classic, racing and supercars and bikes. I think further developing this property would be my greatest joy, I know I'd add at least four race tracks, a six mile oval, a Grand prix track and a big area of forest to bulldoze new rally and rock climbing courses in and of course a drag strip. "Expendable" houses for massive parties and barracks for my brainwashed fanatical tax-deductible minions would soon be added as well.
I'd also have the worlds largest crawler crane, by a margin of at least 50%, built and assembled on my property. Its primary use would be for hoisting and flying the largest battle flags of the world's top age of rail, WW1 and WW2 navies to record heights, well at least during those times that I'm not using it as a wrecking ball to smash purpose built brick and concrete towers.

I would say that it would be cool to have my own little amusement park, but I don't want to be compared to Michael Jackson.

Easy solution: buy or build an amusement park, run it as a business and just close it on certain days for "maintainence" and use it yourself. There are only a few days in the year after all that you would want to use the amusment park anyways.Darth Wong wrote:I would say that it would be cool to have my own little amusement park, but I don't want to be compared to Michael Jackson.
Myself, I'd diversify between political activist and third world industrialist (with some crossover between the two) and I'd also invest heavily in biotech and commercial space flight.

Find a nice town in up north that would not mind a massive ziggernaut of a tower loming over everything, think multie billion doller tower with a few square arches of parking then stock the tower by both buying and inviting companys to move in, offering them dirt cheap rent which I'll creep up over the years

I'd put at least half of it into Space research. I'd try to make space travel/industrialization profitable. If I have enough money, I'm going for FTL drives. Damn do I want an FTL drive to be invented before I die!Trytostaydead wrote:If say, you were as rich as Bill Gates, all in cash assets and decided to live your life in decadence.. what will be your biggest joy in spending that money? Space flight. And ultimately, space sex.
I know, theoretically it's not as good without gravity to work with, but goddamnit it's something I'd want to try! Besides, with that kind of money, I'm sure some sort of technological aid could be put together.
After that... I dunno. Probably buy a symphony orchestra so I could be a conductor... lessons so that the orchestra wouldn't absolutely hate me... make sure the trombone section is hot...
Oh, I'd also want a solid gold contra-bass trombone.
Also, sponsoring air fare and room and board for big SDnet gatherings would be pretty cool.
