Incidentally how old are you? No offence, but it sounds like your parents are still treating you like a child, when you present yourself as an adult. Perhaps you can assert your age? Tell them "I'm an adult now." If I'm not too presumptuous, that is.

facial hair prevents you from getting a job? Thats a new one. i have a goatee and work in a professional environment. My friend Dan has one... he's a senior network administrator for a financial services company. I have friends that have various moustaches, goatees and full beards that work in banks, as engineers etc. Hell, my father is a 50 year old Vice President and senior engineer and he had a full beard. As long as it is kept neatly trimmed and you don't have any shaggy looking stubble, you should be fine. Unless you want to work in a restaraunt, then all bets are off.

I had a goatee and i loved it ..... it's just that everyone else says i look better without it. BAH!

I grow a goatee while not in uniform for a while, (ie over Christmas), but as soon as it's time to put the blue or green back on, off it comes.

Ooooh, if he tries to show examples where he (in a position to hire someone) didn't hire them, you can say; I advice you to speak to your solicitor, because you can be sued for that. At which point his blood pressure should nearly explode because not only did you miss the point of his little anecdote, but you are also right!

I hate all face hair, but if you want to have one, Vym, then they can't stop you and neither can any company unless it's an explicit contradiction to their rules.

That's what my friends tell me. It'll go like this:

- 3 more months of college of law (practical training)
- prescribed work experience period (must be approved by college of law)
- admitted to the practice by Supreme Court
- job

It'll be a while (a year? more?) - right now I just don't have the money to move out.

But yeah, I like goatees. It's so cool that they're fashionable right now. Lots of 'em! YAY!

What makes them think this? There's only a handful of jobs i can think of where wearing a goatee might be frowned upon, such as a front desk person at an upscale motel/hotel, or possibly working in the food industry. Even then the most they might ask is that it be kept trim.

I think I saw a poll once which found people trusted clean shaven faces over hairy ones. Your Dad is wrong, people do find jobs with goatees....but I reckon to be frank your chances would be slightly higher if you shaved it off.

Hell, in my field (digital animation), some kind of facial hair is practically a part of the uniform! (Want proof? Either go to SIGGRAPH or have a look at behind the scenes videos on your Ep I/II DVDs)

Another case of parents not having a clue.

That's the first I've ever heard of a goatee causing problems with getting a job, however, I know that employers do take personal appearance into account. If you think you can get hired looking like a pin cushion then you'll be sadly mistaken.

Of course, that depends on the job you're applying for as well.

Of course they won't tell you that you dodn't get the job because of our goatee or appearance, but if appearance didn't matter, why dress nicely for interviews at all?

The place I work at, facial hair isn't frowned upon, but it must be kept neat and you are not allowed to grow the beard or whatever style while working, gotta do it during vacation or days off...

Me, I'm native american, we don't grow much in the facial hair department.

*scratches at full beard* My father envies this thing. And I interviewed for my job with it and still have it. I'd say your parents are lunatics.

SD.net must be ruining my mind, somehow I read "goatee" as "goatse", as in the "goatse.cx" man.

Anyways, some parents are just like that, my dad keeps telling me to cut my every month or so, claiming that it looks messy & sloppy when it's longer. His words are kindly ignored, I get my hair cut every 3-4 months or so.

Don't listen to them, it won't hinder your ability to land jobs (never stopped me). Just make sure to keep it well kept (AKA don't go into a professional interview with a beardfro containing last weeks lunch...)
