What's your Favorite Cover of a Song?

Post by darthdavid »

Mine is jefferson airplane's cover of leaving on a jetplane. You'd never think that that band could make that sound unless you heard it. The first time i heard it on net radio I thought it's ID3 tag was messed up because i couldn't believe that Jefferson Airplane could make a song like that...

Probably Led Zeppelin's 'Thank You' as done by Tori Amos.

Although I will have to think on it to make sure I'm not forgetting a more amazing one than that...

Sarah Mclachlan's cover of XTC's 'Dear God.' Very sullen, but much more moving with her voice.
"In the new trilogy, Anakin Skywalker portrays a damning indictment of technology's modern dehumanization of mankind through Hayden Christensen's lifeless, almost inhuman performance. Agreed. It's nicely complemented if you mix Sting's version in right before it.

Rush's new album is apparently all covers. I've heard their version of "Summer Time Blues". I'll have to pick that CD up.

Metallica's cover of "Turn the Page" is top-notch, far, far better than the original, in my opinion.

Type O Negative's cover of Cinnamon Girl
Queensryche's cover of Scarborough Fair

Other favorites:
Ugly Kid Joe -- N.I.B.; White Zombie -- Children of the Grave; Mötley Crüe -- Helter Skelter (much better than the Beatles' original); Lenny Kravitz -- American Woman; The Scorpions -- I Can't Explain; Van Halen -- You Really Got Me and Pretty Woman

Guns N' Roses' covers of Cat's in the Cradle and Sympathy for the Devil. I also like The Boys of Summer as done by The Ataris.

It's very good, but it doesn't quite have the sense of loneliness that Bob Seger's version did.

GNR did a cover of Cat's in the Cradle?

I've heard the Ugly Kid Joe version but missed the one by GNR.

Jimi Hendrix' cover of All Along The Watchtower is one of those instances where the cover actually is better than the original. (Probably because Hendrix was a much better guitarist than Bob Dylan)

Worth of mention is also Judas Priest's cover of Better By You, Better Than Me by Spooky Tooth and the same band's cover of Fleetwood Mac's The Green Manalishi. However, in both these cases I have never heard the original so I'm not that good at judging the cover versions as those who have heard both the cover and the original.

I also recall Therion doing an OK cover of Manowar's Thor.

I'm 90% sure it's GNR. It sounds like Axl and either the guitar is Slash or I'm Mickey Rooney.

If you want to hear it, let me know. Maybe you can tell?

It's Ugly Kid Joe. Came out around '91. GnR's cover of Knocking on Heaven's Door came out around the same time IIRC.

Yeah? I could swear it was GNR, but I'll trust your judgment.

usually i hate cover tunes, but Cat Stevens cover of Another Saturday Night is pretty kickass. What's his name now? Yousef Islam or something like that? Jimmy Buffett's live in concert cover of Southern Cross is good as well. And IMHO the G-N-R cover of Sympathy for the Devil is horrid... almost as bad as their cover of Since I Don't Have You. Any self respecting Guns-n-Roses fan burned their copy of The Spaghetti Inncedent long ago.
