I've seen some of the debates that go on around here and I was curious: how DO you usually conduct debates on this board?

I'm not asking for instructions on how to debate. I just want to know what you people do in these things.

Nothing really formal, they mostly just grow out of posts and such.

Hmm normaly I find somone over-zealous on a specfic topic or prehaps under-zealous then I rip thier aurgment apart, occsionaly toss obvious idiot errors to see if they pick up on them(If its my first or second time debating them) Monitior to see how they respond then begin my acutal aurgment after the feints are out there

First, I'll try every sneaky trick in the book--appeal to authority, strawmans, ad hominem attacks, etc. When that doesn't work I'll change the subject!

Usually we state our case, and if the other party's a fuckwit we start screaming at each other and alluding their parentage to non-human sources.

Insult them, curse their mothers, and damn the rest of their family to hell.

Wow. SB's debates usually never get into calc-wars, argument-stomping, counter argument-stomping, source-bashing, and %*&@#$%-level insulting.

The most calc-involved debate I've seen on SB so far was in a debate about carriers vs battleships in space combat, and even that one had less calcs involved than the ones Wong usually gets into. (Now I believe that wherever Wong goes, calc-fests follow ^_^ )

SB's debates seem more common logic-based, while sd.net's seem more hard science-based, from what I can see.


Note: Now I know why I feel intimidated everytime I come into this board. O_O

Everyone's got their own style.

My debating style is conceding all my points and admitting defeat soon after anything against my case is brought up. If only everyone was like that, then we could have those political debates during the commercials break.

For me... quite badly...

Then again... I've not had very much practice...

I lurk, and just do minor nitpicks, although sometimes I have something useful to say.

I try to keep on-topic to the debate as possible (unless for whatever reason someone has a really short attention span and it goes off-topic). But I also try to counter as much as I can with what I know, and then proceed to get pissed off (tho I don't show it) when the debater opposite myself declines to respond to a question made that made a lot of sense, or counter a point.

Moral dilemma: There is a troll/moron in the forum... You have a large piece of 2x4...

For the most part I debate rationally. But in political debates it tends to get out of hand rapidly (the whole Geneva Convention thing in ASVS).

Sometimes I will just flame for the hell of it.

Here's my debating style: sit back and enjoy the show until someone says something that nobody else'll correct. Observe:
