Harry Potter Movie (No spoilers)

Apologies if this has been posted before, but I just saw it and I have to review (without spoiling it for anyone who hasn't seen it.) This is probably one of the best movies I've seen in the last year. It features a story line that is involved all the way through, few slow moments, lot's of laughs, dark and unbelievable scenes that I would never have expected in a Potter movie, and some of the most incredible up-close human CGI I've ever seen. After the first movie I was sceptical of the Harry Potter series, but after this movie I think it is going to end up being one of my favorites. I'm sure it is going to piss off alot of the mothers who bring in their 3 year olds who expect to see your standard Disney movie (even though the mothers themselves actually enjoy it), but this is definitely the best so far. Choosing a former porn director was a wise decision. He pulled off the new agnst filled teenage Potter without a hitch. Two thumbs up and four stars from the peanut gallery.

Small spoiler:
The movie has the keepers of Azkaban, which look like the Nazgul without legs. They definitely give the Nazgul a run for their money in the scare factor area.

Please, the Nazgul went around swinging swords and the king got his ass kicked by a pissed off girl. The Dementors sucked out a guy's freakin soul.

I'm talking about the Nazgul from the books, which can radiate fear and madness so that even the whole armies cower in induced fear of them. Besides, the Witch King had a prophecy working against him there... normally he's unstoppable in combat, which is what prompted the prophecy to be made in the first place.

*rips thread back on topic*

I loved it. Since I have not read sny of the books, I was still able to be pleasently surprised by the various twists and turns in the movie. And I want one of those falcon/horse thingies! God, that was cool. And this was much more grown up than the first two, IMO. As it should be, with them getting older. Was darker, and the ending was not anywhere near what I expected it to be, especially after the first two movies. Soundtrack kicked ass too. :P

Oh, and Dementors > Nazgul.

I'd put it at a solid 3 stars, maybe 3 and a half. By far the best movie of the series. Yes, the purists will be screaming for blood since they left so much out of the book, but with a two hour running time you have to expect that. Ten stars to the set designers by the way, they did some truly amazing work redesigning large parts of the school and showing MUCH more of the grounds than we've ever seen. One more note, I was smart enough to go to the 11:30 PM show last friday, so the little kids who were there slept through it all, and the irritating teenagers had all mostly gone home already.

Really, I only had one real problem with it (spoilers follow in teeny tiny little type)

In both the movie and the book, Harry loses his broom in the first Quidditch match of the year when the Dementors swarm the stadium and attack him. In the book he mysteriously receives a Firebolt broom for Christmas, and there's a long sub-plot where they're trying to find out who the broom is from (Sirius Black), and whether it's been cursed or something. At the end of the book, Harry, gets a letter from Sirius explaining that the broom was from him, and it was intended to make up for 13 years of missed birthdays and Christmasses. He also gives the owl delivering the letter to Ron, to make up for losing his pet rat.

In the movie, Sirius sends the new broom to Harry at the very end of the movie, meaning that Harry played the entire Quidditch season without his own broom, and there was no mention at all of the new owl for Ron. Not a major point by any means, but it annoyed the hell out of me.

I'm still going to have to contest this. When is the last time a single Dementor has caused an army full of experienced warriors to go from enraged bloodlust over the Mordor orcs "releasing the prisoners" to wetting themselves in terror by their presence? I mean, naturally warriors who have seen brutal hand-to-hand combat are made of less stern stuff than schoolchildren, right?

Duh! They all played Half-Life, GTA, and other violent video games, remember? :D

I'd give it three stars, or maybe three and a half. It was good, especially since it had a lot to cover, but there are a couple things about it that nag at me that I think an extra 15 minutes of movie would have cured. That and the music didn't rock me on my heels like I wanted it to.

I think CoS is my favourite movie of the three, but I'm eagerly anticipating GoF. It's my favourite book; I hope it will also be my favourite movie.

2 Stars. Excellant CGI and effects and some clever merging of scenes but still to shorted and chopped it to little bits, with none of the finesse that makes Harry Potter a good read. (Not really the fault of the director/cast etc. but of the mere idea you can effective get a 300 page book into a two or three hours)

Two stars. It was a good movie if you'd read the book. I don't think it stands on its own very well.

Three stars, I haven't read the books, and I found it enjoyable. The friends I watched it with, though, had to fill me in on the backstory the book provided, but the movie never went over (the four animalists, I'm sure readers of the books would know about them), thus, three stars instead of four.

I'd tend to disagree. I've seen all three, and never read one of the books, and I thought the movies were excellent. In fact, I think I can enjoy it more, because I see it as just the movie, and thus don't have the changes from the book standing out in my mind. Kinda like LotR in that way...

But then again, I seem to be pretty easygoing about movies...I liked the new BSG after all. :)

I read the first two books when they came out, and I still enjoyed the movies. Movies are almost never as good as the books, so I think the movie is more enjoyable if you watch it first then read the book.

And you know what, its not hard to dig up stuff that could have been cut to get those 15 minutes.

Not to mention the Reign of Terror that got him labeled the Witch King of Angmar in the first place. He was the one that brought down Arnor and slewn every man, elf, and dward that got in his way when he while he did it. Sucking souls if for amatuer. Wreaking bloody carnage for centuries is for the pros.

I KNOW!! That's why it annoys me the way it does!
