Oral Fixation (not as bad as it sounds)

What can I do to overcome this (If anything)? I have an oral fixation. For those of you that may not know what it is, it is when a person cannot stop playing with their mouth (ie, chewing on lip, playing with tongue (ring), etc. I constantly am playing with my tongue ring, and it's starting to hurt my teeth. I know it would be helpful if I got some sugarfree gum, but chewing gum starts to hurt my jaw. In that case, what then? Also, I can't hav gum with sugar for more than a few minutes, because it starts to stick to the balls on the tongue bar. (Keep in mind that I am a poor college student!)

What should I do???

(This sounds like SUCH a Dear Abby question...)

So, in an essence, you're trying to break a habit, yes?

I don't know what to say, except:

1) Get a new habit that overpowers the old one

2) Consciously think about what you're doing with you're tongue more. Eventually, your act of not moving your tongue around or whatever so much may translate over into a sub-conscious tendency not to move your tongue around.

That's what I think. For real help, you'll probably have to go find someone more qualified, maybe a psychologist or something.

What, I can't make light of the situation?

Seriously though, it's a problem for me. I'm compelled to spend more time gratifying my woman in that way then getting gratified myself.

But back to the point Verillion, do you smoke as well? I believe that's another oral fixation too. My roomate seems to have the same sort of problem, he's getting his tongue pierced today, so he'll probably be doing the same thing. I guess it's one of those nervous habbits things. I have them too, usually I twirl a pen around my fingers, or my leg will move unconciously.

I can stop my leg moving...and tell your friend NOT to play with it for at least two weeks...he WON'T be able to do it.

And yes, I smoke, but not a lot. On occasion, but when I do, it's about three cigarettes a day for a few days. About a week and a half + between smoking times.

I can stop it from moving when I'm aware that it's happening, but sometimes it sorta just does it when paying attention to other things.

Yeah, he knows about the ring thing. The funny thing is, earlier today he has an interview for a new job. That should be a good way to start out, not being able to talk right for the first week or so.

Well, you can talk...just not well. Tell him to drink plenty of water and always have some ice around, if possible.

Heh. That should be intresting with the ice, when he's working in the Electronic's department, and it's nowhere near him. Almost wish i could be there to laugh.

My gf mentioned something about listerine after everything you eat? That right? She's had hers done too, had it for a while.

Yes Listerine. I used glyoxide as well. Will get that thing healed right up! The ice was just for getting the swelliung down. After anytime you put something besides water in your mouth (food, coke, smoking, even)

i have the same problem except it isn't necesarily an oral fixation i am pretty much worried more about what the girl is thinking then how much gratification i myself am getting. i mean sometimes i find myself purely trying to gratify her and not een expecting anything in return, although it might just be nervousness but i do find myself doing more to gratify her than myself does anyone have any advice on that one :?:
