And then......

I suddenly find myself wishing I knew more about Sci-Fi and SW/ST in general.....
Posted: 2002-10-30 11:01pm
by Stravo
Why's that?
Posted: 2002-10-30 11:02pm
by haas mark
Because at late hours of the night....everyone posts in the PSW and SW/ST forums....and I have no idea what to say. And then more than half the time, I have no idea what's going on in OSF. I'd like to get into the discussions, but I can't....

Start by reading the Heir to Empire Trilofy, the Hand of Thrawn Duology. That should keep you busy for a while.

Watch Star Wars, see some Star Trek episodes, and you'll reach my level of SW and ST understanding.

Do you watch much sci-fi? If you don't, it would seem to be a hopeless task to learn more about sci-fi. One should not study it if one does not enjoy it; otherwise, it would become work.

Then watch ST2-4 and ST6, the best of the movies. Ignore the others.

I think he's looking to participate right away...unfortunately if he has to read all that it will take him weeks to get up to speed. I'm surrpised you weren't into sci fi in some way for joining this board in the first place.

Well for a quick primer then, read Mike's main site. It'll give you good head start and then check out Curtis Saxton's site as well.

Go to your local public library. They usually have an awful selection, but you might get lucky. I found Consider Phlebas and Feersum Endjinn at a public library. They should have few of the essentials at least. Keep an eye out for Heinlein novellas and anthologies of Clarke and Asimov. They will likely have a profusion of novels by Piers Anthony. Do not touch them. They will give you leprosy.

Ah hell, Star Crossed KIND OF counts for something. You get an idea about most of the major characters in ST and SW....you know Kirk is God and Sith are BAD. That kind of thing.
Don't worry Verilon, you can post even if you don;t know much, most folks know you here and no one is going to jump down your throat for anything.

Study up on history, science, and military theory. You'd be surprised at how well people do when they stumble into those sci-fi forums with near-zero knowledge of sci-fi but strong knowledge of those subjects.
