Am I out of touch with the times or what?

Ok. I recently completed a trip to the states as outlined in my prior posts.
One of those days I decided to go revisit some of my stomping grounds of my youth. The Mall...I was a mall rat when I was a teenager and I havn't been to a mall in almost a decade. So as I was walking to the entrence to the Palace of my Youth tm I noticed an very pretty young woman about the exit the door I was about to enter. I reached and opened the door and said "After you" she exited and said in a rather snotty and bitchy voice "Get real, its the 21st centery"
Now, I was rather stunned speechless, I had not ment my actions to be taken as some type of "pick up" line or anything, I thought was showing simple good manners.
I think "a lot" of you on this board are younger than me, I am 31. Am I out of touch with the times or was this just a isolated incedent? Thank you for your input.

Hunt the bitch down and then tie her down and mail her to RayCav......
I think that's sufficient punishment for being a bitch. And yes, she was
a bitch....

Maybe a bit of both. We have the "independent woman," now. Women are a double-edged sword...you either open the door for them, and get bitche dat becuase they can do it themselves (ie, your case), or not open the door for them and get bitched at. Very fun, innit? Women are fickle...grr....

I know that verilon.. its just the tone of voice she used...the utter spite.. it was it took me rather by suprise. Are good manners i.e. opening doors for others, saying hello thank you etc. still being used in daily interactions? I guess I just had a very bad case of culture shock. Oh well, back to the good ol' FRD for me.

Yeh, they are, but this was just a bitchy bitch in particular. Maybe she was PMSing or some such thing...

And have a good comback ready for the bitchs
*What does this mean I shoot you instead?(Very effective for me as previously mentioned)
*Would you prefer I kicked you in the shin as I passed?

It's still being used, but it seems to happen less and less. What I've noticed is that people don't really expect to interact in some situations. For example if someone opened a door for me and I thanked them, about half the time they'd seem surprised or shocked, and kinda mumble or stutter something back at me. If I just go through the door nothing happens, there's no interaction at all and everything just continues along. Who knows, I'm only in my early 20's, but I already feel like I'm from an older generation sometimes.

I would have come back with something snippy as a response but the "shell shock" got the best of me. Over here in Germany, we... at least the area I live in, say hello...have I nice day, thank you, etc. with every personal interaction we have. I may be buying a loaf of bread at the bakery and after the transaction I say thank you have a nice day-weekend whatever... its just the way things work around here. I dont know...I think I've been Krautanized.

No, it's generally like that over here. You were just unfortunate to come across a complete bitch.

And that is a bad thing? I am currently learning the german language, and will be visiting that fine country over the summer. I would love to be "Krautanized"

No no not a bad thing at all...except the damn taxes..*shudder* can you imagine paying over $4 a gallon for regular unleaded.. other than that I think its great over here. I can feel safe letting my two boys go out and play without the fear that some sicko will come and snatch them up.

You are not out of touch with the times. We are the same age. Ive held doors for people since I was a teen, and some people say "thank you" and some dont. Women to be frank are touchy, some will say thank you, some will think its romantic, and some will be offended. So you really cant win.
Im located in the San Francisco Bay Area and like someone mentioned earlier people just dont expect interaction when they are out and about. One curious thing I have noticed is when you go skiing, people are very friendly. They stop to see if you are okay when you are sitting in the snow after falling down. They talk to you on the lift, etc.

Sometimes I hold the door at the mall, usually for older women. I'm trying to be polite.
Are there a lot of feminazis around Germany? Did you ever hear of that Swedish feminazi group that wanted to remove urinals form men's restrooms?

there´s no notable femnazi presence over here. they´ll just say thank you if you open the door for them. at least i´ve never had a problem with something like that. but then, i´m an extremely good looking guy (see my sig) whom women just cant resist, not even femnazis
.

From the female perspective:
Lazy little Gen-Yer. Even *I* hold doors open for people. I'm always surprised to get a "thank you" or even have a young man hold the door open for me. I always thank someone when they hold the door for me.
