What does it for you.

I was talking with my friend who was recovering from a motorcycle accident the other day. He was seriously injured and as a result was taking some mean medication. Anyway, we started talking about how everyone would get on his case if he got another motorcycle, because this wasn't his first accident and everyone is already on his case because he refuses to give up motorcycling.
He turned to me an pointed out that motorcycling is the one thing he likes to do.
That really hit me because there is something I really like, and once you find that special something, how could you ever give it up? For me, oddly enough, it was dancing.
So I thought I'd put it to the forum, what are the things that you guys like? I mean in the things that were special to you, the kind of thing you couldn't give up.

Playing th eviola...I will not ever give it up, even if I have carpal tunnel and tennis elbow...I will always love that instrument, and nothing (aside from lack of funds) will keep me away from it...and if I can't haveit, I'll stick to writing my novel and composing music.
I expect to hear a very eloquent response from Stravo on his joys of writing.
And Wong--just sex, or anal sex in particular?

chocolate.
If I ever become allergic to chocolate, I will commit suicide by going to Hershey and diving in the Special Dark vat and eating myself into oblivion.

Sounds like an idea to me! I think I'll join you: my favorite chocolate is Hershey's Special Dark! Mmmm!!!
This has something to do with Quake 3, but I'm not sure what

Mountain biking. I can't put it into words but it's something that's just a part of me now, and I can't imagine my life without it.

Is there any doubt that for me, writing is the thing that sets my mind free. When we work or do the other mundane chores that occupy most of our time (unfortunately) there is no time to truly enjoy yourself. However, I can write as I do these things - in my head. As I sit in front of a computer and research legal issues, my mind is a million miles away thinking up of a whole new world, or simply wondering "How in the hell am I going to get Kirk out of this fine mess?"
Then there is the wonderful process of just sitting down and letting all those thoughts and ideas that have been blossoming in your head loose. When the keys of my keyboard clack its like a symphony to me because my ideas, my thoughts, my passions are all being laid out there.
The BEST part of the whole process is one I've only recently discovered. The reaction of an audience to my work. For years I had hoarded my writing away from everyone because I was too embarrassed to show it. NOW it's SUCH a thrill to see people actually demanding to see more.
So in short, writing does it for me in so many ways.

Guitar :: glares at Verilon and his viola playing self ::... without my guitar I'd probably be a nervous, twitching, duel coranary bypass person by now.

daydreams/fantasies--if someone were to hack into my brain and not allow me to imagine, you may as well squish me into nonexistence like a bug. it's so ingrained in me that i wouldn't be myself without it.
however, since the above is unlikely, i'll have to say my music. whether it's playing it (percussion, piano, bari sax, cello, horn, etc), teaching it, writing/arranging it, listening to it--it's my main outlet (other than the imagining thing).

I always find it hilarious that I love dancing so much. I've always avoided art classes throughout my scholastic career until one day I wandered into a dance class. Now I can't stop. And the weird thing is that it makes me happy. Not just a little happy, I mean really, outrageously, stupid, happy.
And that's why I can't stop.

Hey Verilon, have you considered starting a string quartet? All you need is two violins and a cello.
As for me, the thing that keeps me going is prayer
to the great old ones, whose names are unknown to the minds of sane men and who will someday return to rule the world in all their glory and crush the human race like the ants they are.
I also like posting to these forums.
