This may seem really strange, but when using a rectangular mousepad, do you like the long side going vertically (toward/away from you) or sideways (parallel to you). I find most people seem to like it to go the horizontal way, but I like the vertical way. Opinions?

Vertical way here.

And that has anything to do with the question HOW?

Vertical. I find that I need to scroll up & down more than side to side, this orientation optimized the useable surface to better match my needs. Of course the graphic design on my particular mousepad is also made to be viewed in the vertical orientation, and it would greatly disturb me if it were to be placed sideways.

Have the laser-eye type of mouse now, so don't use mouse pads anymore. However, the printed "grain" on my desktop can screw with the mouse, so I've taped down a white piece of paper, in effect making it a mouse pad, so.....

horizontal way

I lay it out vertical not so much because of the way I use the mouse, but because if gives me room to put a radio next to my right hand.

My mouse pad is square, making the question meaningless. However, the pad rests upan a psychology textbook which is not square. The textbook rests ninety degrees from vertical, making it horizontal.

Rodents are awkward. I've got several trackballs, a touchpad, a drawing tablet, and that's all I use for pointing devices. No rodents anywhere, so no mice pads to think about.

I have optical mouse, and a black mousepad with "Fry's Electronics" on it.

Speaking of mouse and mousepad:
