In honor of this day.......July 21, 1861

In honor of the day:

(tune: "When Johnny Comes Marching Home")

In eighteen-hundred and sixty-one,
Hurrah, hurrah,
We whupped the Yankees at Bull Run,
Hurrah, hurrah,
We whupped the Yankees at Bull Run
And they all skeedaddled to Washington
And we'll all drink stone-blind,
Johnny come fill the bowl!

FIRST MANASSAS TRIVIA: Among the elements of the Yankee Army put to flight in wild disorder was a batallion of US Marines under Major J.G. Reynolds (serving with the First Brigade of the 2nd Division). So, the only army in world history to make Marines flee a battlefield like scared rabbits is the Confederate Army!

Yeah, too bad that complete collapse of Confederate discipline caused them to miss the finest opportunity of the war to capture Washington. And too bad that they lost the war so badly in the end.

Let me take a wild stab at the dark here... is Sheppard posting something about the US? How uncharacteristic.

No, he's posting about the CSA. Bull Run was the first major battle of the American Civil War and was a resounding victory for the forces of racial oppression.

Once again, you fall into the simplistic claptrap taught in pubic skuels.

I'm reminded of the Simpsons episode where Apu is taking the test
to get his citizenship, and they ask him about the causes of the
Civil War, and Apu goes on with a brilliant, long winded dissertation
of the causes, and the tester goes:

"Hey hey, Just say Slavery and you pass."

[EDIT] Here's the full quote:

Citizenship Examiner: All right, here's your last question.
What was the cause of the Civil War?

Apu: Actually, there were numerous causes. Aside from
the obvious schism between the abolitionists and the
anti-abolitionists, there were economic factors, both
domestic and inter -

Citizenship Examiner: Wait, wait... just say slavery.

Apu: Slavery it is, sir.

I was kidding. And I wasn't taught that in school, I was taught that the Civil War was primarily a result of Economic and Societal differences between the North and South--that is, the differences between burgeoning industrial capitalism and agrarian slaveocracy. I had a good history teacher.

You usually have good history teachers until college, where you get taught "History: REWRITTEN". Now that the Confederate Flag has been banned and vilified, the civil rights groups are now attacking the American Flag.

That and many laws were designed to to support northern industries and caused southern agriculture to collapse.

Oregon didn't even exist. Interesting that most
Americans identify with the Union. I never hear anyone say we lost, just we won against the South. Where were your ancestors in the Civil War?

Damn, what do I care?

Sure as hell Oregon is north of the general dividing line between the South and the North.

During the Civil War.

Father's Side: Germany and Wales, being opressed Jews and Coal Mine slaves respectively.

Mother's Side: Fighting as Mercinaries for both sides, while living as Poor Irish folks in the South.

Father's side: Laughing at the stupid Americans, while living happily in Moscow.

Mother's side: Living in a small village near Vologda, and probaly not knowing that America even exists.

Very much involvement on behalf of my ancestors, indeed. :D

I did not find anything amusing about this thread…

Standing in front of the Iowa monument at Vicksburg I found the names of two my ancestors, both Union men. A third lost his leg at Gettysburg; a fourth survived the war after marching through Georgia with Sherman’s vengeful hoards in blue. The fifth relative on my mother’s side came from Liberty county Missouri; he disappeared between 1861 and 1865 and does not appear on the Union of Confederate roles. You be the judge: but I do know he turns up arrested in 1867 for burning barns in Kansas.

Let's face it, Economic Slavery was very present in the Nineteenth Century, in most Industrialized areas, folks not getting paid enough for work that killed them young then the companys were charging them to live in conditions worse then those of the Slaves. Before the Civil War, a factory tenement housing in the North Burnt to the ground, killing hundreds of Italian workers. THey sent the Irish to clean up the mess.

Nor does this change the fact the Slavery is still present. Look at San Francisco's Garment Industry. Or the primary money maker for the Russian Mafia (Kidnapping Young Women and Selling them as slaves to Brothels in Europe, the US, and the Middle East).

Most Irish took the jobs that no one else would, so they were pretty bad off till the late 20th century.
