Can no one get convicted in this country. Ridder just got off on shop lifting and got convicted of Vandalism. They got video of her stealing the stuff and they still couldn't convict her of shoplifting, just appearently vandalizing the merchendise by romoveing it from the hanger.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Winona Ryder was found guilty on shoplifting charges Wednesday.





The jury found the Oscar-nominated actress guilty of grand theft and vandalism but not guilty of the charge of commercial burglary.

The actress was accused of going on a spree at a Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, Calif., without paying for $5,500 worth of merchandise.

The six-man, six-woman jury, which includes a movie studio boss and several others who work in the entertainment business, deliberated for five hours on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old star of Girl, Interrupted was in court Wednesday, dressed in maroon coat dress to hear the verdict.

The prosecution had suggested the actress shoplifted for the thrill of it and the defense portrayed her as the victim of overzealous security guards.

"She came, she stole, she left, end of story," prosecutor Ann Rundle said in her closing argument.

Defense attorney Mark Geragos suggested that Saks, trying to avoid a lawsuit, conspired with employees to invent a story that would make Ryder appear to be a thief and vandal.

Ryder, who celebrated her birthday under the unhappy circumstances of the trial, has appeared in more than two dozen other movies, including Mr. Deeds, Little Women, Reality Bites, and Edward Scissorhands.

why don't these celebrities see shrinks. I mean if you have the money you might as well buy the product.

From what I've heard even the average joe isn't very likely to get jail. And a celebrity... no fucking way.

Well the reason is b/c the DAs wanted to convict her for a felony!! Shoplifting ain't afelony as fa as I know even if the merchandise was an exhorbitant amount like $5,000. There are occurences where the value was more than that, and it was a misdemeanor. I'll have to look it up to be sure.

How can there even be any defense? They have a video of her taking stuff. They must have records showing she didn't pay for the stuff.

The jury was made up of entertainment execs. One member produced 3 of her movies. What happened to "conflict in interests"?

Put her in jail. If she wasn't famous, she'd be a quarter of the way through her sentence.

Why do movie stars need to steal? They mae 20 million a movie, and keep most of it to themselves.

Some say she was practicing for a role in an upcoming movie where she was a shoplifter. And just where is this movie? Oh, and she wasn't cotting sensor tags, just trying out the new scissors she stole.

Some sa she wanted attention. Again, she's world famous. It's impossible to get more attention that what she was already getting. I say we make this one of life's ironies. She wanted to get attention, but's getting just the opoosite, jail, where she can't get any attention.
