I say this is a conspiracy by the RN to get rid of the ships faster to get parliment to get more new ships, the destroyer was pretty old, speeding up her death would give incentive to add another T45 to the construction bill.

The T boats are the best of the UK's SSN's. Only recently did they reenter general service after suffering from major reactor problems for several years.

Yeah, but the T boats are about 15 years old, and are due to be replaced by the last of the Astutes.

Bad plan on the RN's part. It's far more likely to be used against the current SSN and DDG programs. The damn inept fleet is just going to lose anything we give them, they can make do with what they've got for another two decades!

There are many who want to see the Type 45's cut to 6-9 ships and the Astute program canalled completely and replaced with a couple AIP SSK's if at all.

Just recently the UK Treasury actually told the MoD to cut ground forces from its Iraq plans and to make new plans that did not call for ground forces! The grounds where cost. Currently everyone seems to be ignoring them though.

The first boat may be safe, however only a limited selection of long lead items are being built for the rest of the class. They could still easily be canceled.

Indeed, the RN would be utterly fucked if the Type 45 buy is cut back. However the British armed forces are already greatly under funded for what they have, even though the UK could easily support a force twice as large. However the powers that be have less common sence then my pet rock.

In the good ol'days of the British Empire, these two "captains" would already be in irons waiting impending court martial. A mere formality which would leave them, in the best case, professionally ruined and starving.

In the worst case, they would be spared to further worries.

This happens pretty frequently. Barely a year goes by where a RN ship doesn't end up on a sand bar somewhere in the world - it's just getting more attention now because of the Nottingham incident.
It must happen to the USN and all other navies, though. Just never makes the papers, because the ships in question aren't usually as damaged as Nottingham was.

USN ships run aground very rarely. But they do happen, captains basically never get another command though they might still get promoted shore side if its found not to be there fault. However with no hope of another command there career is dead.

However Nottingham is a big deal not only because the ship was in danger of sinking for an hour, but also because they hit a large rock which is above the surface much of the time in the middle of the open ocean. The ship was also only in the area because the captain wanted to get a lock as some big rock. Though I do admit after having seen only one picture I'd also alter course to see it if I was passing by.

Grounding while leaving a port when you have little maneuverability and very confined channels are a lot more understandable.

I thought they were recovering the helo after medivacing a rating to Aus? Captain was on the helo, AFIAK. Stupid git thought he was on Star Trek and decided to lead the medivac away mission himself.

That happened to be what there where doing at the time, but it was not why the ship was in the area in the first place.
