Installed Mandrake 9.0 a couple of days ago. The computer hasn't exploded yet which I assume is a good sign as far as using Linux goes.

Certainly a big change from WinXP, so far I'm impressed.

I'm actually very impressed with the work that's been done on various Linux distros. They've really come a long way, and KDE and Gnome are at least the equals of the Windows XP GUI in terms of ease of use. The fact that your average Linux distro comes with free Office software and ready to do just about anything you want leapfrogs Windows' standard software suite.

The only thing holding Linux back at this point, and by no fault of its own, is compatibility. Currently, Linux has very poor compatibility with internet multimedia, like QuickTime and Windows Media (although there are QuickTime solutions available, not free though).

I like the world clock that comes with Madrake 8.2. Really neat utility.

I want to try Linux, too, but I've hit two snags: one of my drives, apparently, has a corrupt partition table; and the otherone, the Mandrake installer just refuses to resize the single partition that's on there (FAT32 Primary Partition).

Guess I'll have to wait till I can get Partition Magic.

Install MPlayer (the developers don't have the best docs, but it's pretty sweet once you get it running, and it does DVD and Divx), flash, and Java and you'll be good to go. Those are the three biggest items that I wish they would pre-install (although I understand they're all pre-installed on the powerpack and prosuite editions; I guess they figure that if you get the free one, you might as well do the work for yourself).
